Yesterday I updated my nvidia driver and gforce software. Nvidia changed without asking the display settings for Eu4 to full screen yes which is known to crash eu4 and lock up my computer. I went to settings.txt and changed things back to match a working backup copy but the game still crashed. I then did a full system restore from disk images and everything is working again using my old nvidia driver.

So my question is fairly simple - for the future: What are the known setting files for Eu4 display mode - ie full screen or borderless? So far I have found settings.txt and pdx_settings.txt both of which have settings for display mode. Do you know of any others that Nvidia can goof up when trying to apply optimal settings? I know that changing the setting.txt file alone is not enough.

Thanks.

Usually pdx_settings.txt overrides settings.txt. You can use the launcher to change pdx_settings.txt and eu4 will automatically adjust settings.txt when you start it the next time. But I don't know if the nvidia software can override the display mode. You could check to see if it has settings for specific programs. I think stuff like this is usually in the geforce experience software

Thanks. On my computer if something changes settings to full screen even the launcher locks up. I now have a backup of pdx_settings.txt also so I can change back. I was worried there might be another file but apparently settings and pdx_settings are the only two.

If this refers to GeForce Experience, yes it can. I recommend unloading that before starting the game.

To get around this, Right click on eu4.exe , properties, compatibility. Tick "disable fullScreen optimisations" untick every other box in that dialog, Apply and exit.

Does that help?

Thanks for the reply. With that change I can run fullscreen = yes. Do I have to do that every time Paradox does a patch with a new exe?

I fear so! Sorry about that.
