Convinced by my impressions of the Elmokki Kinslayer's and other peoples AARs, I desided to start my own right here, right now.

It currently occurs in Ireland, I'll be plaing Duke of Meath, Count of Meath having Bishop of Mide as a vassal.
The scenario chosen is Hastings 1066.

Oh, and my screenies might be a little incorrect on the dates, don't worry, it's only because I take some in the start and some in the end of the sessions, mostly things that stay the same.

---

Part I: 1066-1073, first impressions of Ireland

Royal relations

At first, let me introduce you, Conchbar O'Brien, the Duke of Meath:

conchbar.jpg

Conchbar has three sons, which the oldest shall inherit the titles of his father later on, but let as not forget, that he is the new Count of Mide himself:

son.jpg

The maker of the next boy-child to inherit the name was left to Murchaid, who choose a member of the court in Mide.

Malachy, the second O'Brien in line, got married with Cecilia de Normandie, the oldest daughter of the King of England.

The third son, Aed, got married to a muslim, probably to scare the hell out of his father and the christian world. Unfortunately Aed's plans got stuck 'cause his bride isn't fertile anymore.

---

Going for it: The King of Ireland

meath.jpg

In the start of '66, just after he appointed the leaders for his court, Conchbar made his first decisions concerning the creation of an Ireland with one leader for all to follow.

The problems on the silent moors of Ireland was that it was very poor area, and that the diseases tended to strike there very often.

To make his people richer, Conchbar desided to collect as much money as possible to create such a facilities as forestry, sawmill and fishery - in the end, they would bring the most money if built in the beginning.

To get more money, Conchbar needed more land. Crusading too many peninsulas away would have been too costy, so Conchbar had to stay in Ireland.

The problem followed was to gain more prestige in order to claim other areas of Ireland to himself, to conguer them.

---

The Action

Conchbar's prestige loss was little, but it had to be turned as improving! The major problem was that Murchaid, his oldest son, was without land.

The only and easiest way of achieving this was to revoke the title of Bishop of Mide and grant the title of Count of Mide to Murchaid.

Normally, this might have affected the new Count's loyalty, but their family ties were tighter.

grandson.jpg

After few years, Conchbar finally got his son's greatest achievement in front of his eyes, a grandson.

Like the poor conditions of Ireland weren't enough. God really wanted to spank poor Conchbar, deciding to arrive dysentery and small pox in to Meath. Luckily the irishmen were fast enough to build fishery and forestry before this.
Like this wasn't enough, a thieves' guild was formed.

osraige.jpg

In the middle of problems, Conchbar was able to gain enough prestige in order to claim the title of Count of Osraige. Soon his armies were on the way, and the threat of Duke of Leinster was dealed too.

attack.jpg

The forces in Osraige were vitally weakened so the troops formed one bigger and started to siege Osraige, which was finally conguered in the new years eve of 1072-1073.

During this part of game, I thought I'd have not much to tell in here. Whilst writing this it just seems to grow and grow.

(This part was written twice 'cause my IE decided to crash  , my opinion is that the first was better but you'll never know for sure...)

Part II: 1073-1085, evolving

Neutralizing efforts

January 18, 1073.
The Duke of Leinster had got into somekind of argument with the Duchy of Ulster, so he decided cowardly to suggest us peace. Even this war was a 10-0 to us, we decided to accept as we didn't have enough prestige for anymore titles at the moment.

wp.jpg

On July 14th, the Small Pox in Dublin finally receded, making Conchbar more anxious of the future.

April 29th, 1076.
Three years after Small Pox had been got rid of, Dysentery also made a retreat, leaving Dublin to a pillaged shape, but giving some hope for it. The only real enemy of Meath left was the Thieves' Guild.

disease.jpg

Getting Dublin richer, allowed Conchbar to finally admit his debt to his second son, making Malachy the Count of Osraige on March 8th 1078.

---

Rising power

April 10, 1079.
Even confessing his debt to Malachy, the Pope wasn't satisfied and demanded the change of the law concerning to church supremacy. Conchbar wanted to show the world that he was a man of belief, but that didn't mean he was afraid of the church, even of excommunication.

July 20th, one of Conchbar's largest wishes on advancements, so to say, was achieved; Roads. Even though they might help the diseases to spread, they would pay back in spreading other advancements.

road.jpg

February 18th, 1080.
Finally the second Fishing Wharf of Dublin was completed. The first one (kept as a secret for inner purposes) was destroyed in the first war with the Duke of Leinster and there was no idea to start building it before 'cause of the diseases.

---

Marching on

The next checkpoint of the Conchbar's campaign was achieved on September 19th. Enough prestige had been gathered in order to claim the title of Count of Laigin, currently held by the Duke of Leinster. The only place the Duke of Leinster would have attacked was Dulbin, so it was decided as the unition place of the armies of Conchbar, his first son Murchaid and his second son Malachy.

laigin.jpg

The fight was soon over, and the siege begun. On February 2th, 1081, a messenger arrived. The news couldn't have been better! Conchbar's wife, Mary, on her late 40's, had gotten pregnant!

child.jpg

Soon after the news, on April 22th, a pretty Laiginish wench caught Conchbar's eye. Usually this would have been his disability, but the child did acts of a true christian even before his/her birth. Conchbar was soon known as a chaste man.

Only few months later, on June 20th, another good news arrived. Two field system had been invented in Dublin!

On October 12th, a girl by the name of Aíbinn O'Brien was born to Conchbar and Mary.

child2.jpg

---

Calming down

August 24th, 1082.
Laigin was finally liberated and added to the Duchy of Meath. On his way back home Conchbar realised that his fighting men seemed to be more peasants than knights. To honor their efforts he focused Meath's advancements to piercing weapons. Longspear was invented on April 26th, 1084.

During the last year of this part, the 64 years old Conchbar gathered enough money and created the title of Duke of Leinster to himself, finishing his part of the plans of taking over Ireland's control. Granting Laigin to his third son, Aed, came to his mind but he decided to keep it for now in order to enrich.

We shall see if the 65 years old Duke will soon be inherited by Murchaid, or will he continue his own campaing on Ireland.

Very nice indeed. Im going to go for the kingship as Connacht but Meath is ok to i guess

I chose Meath as Dublin is the current capital and I like the CoA the most (Well, maybe Leinster is the nicest). Another reason might also be the surname O'Brien (yes, I know some other Duchies/Counts have it on Ireland as well).

Did you change succession laws, or are you still electoral? Though for the moment in seems all your vassals are potential heirs anyway.

Good start, you've had more success than I have at uniting Ireland!

Yes indeed, I did. I actually thought about including the information, but in the end I forgot it.

There were some hints altough (to myself to remember ;) ):

Conchbar has three sons, which the oldest shall inherit the titles of his father later on...

and

Normally, this might have affected the new Count's loyalty, but their family ties were tighter.

Aha, another promising Irish AAR... I look forward to watching your rise to royalty :)

please, please tell me that "Conan" is on the Irish name list. :D
High King of Ireland, King of Late Night.

With his dreaded spymaster Max Weinberg, Steward Andrew Richter and Chancellor Joel Goddard :D

Sorry this part took a little bit, I was on a five hours lasting PR trip to Tampere the whole day after school. Tomorrow I won't be writing at all, for I'm going to watch Kill Bill vol. 2.

Btw, how do you think about my use of pictures? I think I use too few, but actually there are too much!

Part III: 1085-1093, retired?

Gathering money

January 24th of 1086, a sad message came from the Italian states. Pope had passed out, but not to mention that Conchbar's neighbour, William de Normandie had become the papal controller.

pope.jpg

The plan in order to reach more leadership was sure; Conchbar needed more money. To find ways of improving it's incomes, Meath had to look in to the mirror. Their steward was good, but not the best. Thence Conchbar looked upon his court and chose a fellow man - marrying him to the steward of Apulia.

steward.jpg

Next part was to collect more money in order to improve the state of Meath, was of course to build more improvements. June 2th of 1087, enough money had been gathered in order to build a library, which was started immediately and finished a year later.

---

Growing weaker?

"It was a rainy, typical, day in the city of Dublin. Conchbar rose from his bed and looked into his mirror. The mirror was decorated with for example the Harp of Leinster and the Eagle of Meath, without forgetting a single symbol of an area in Ireland. The mirror reflected an image of a perfect country, surrounding an old, pale man."

conchbar69.jpg

Conchbar had liven long, knowing he couldn't control the united Ireland himself, but passing the task to his children and them to their children. He was already 69, and that he knew that he wouldn't live forever.

In order to take advantage of his current prestige, he had to go on a conguer himself. When forgetting the provinces with a duchy capital, the most richest he didn't own was probably Urmumu. Money was just what he needed, so it was quick to decide, Urmumu was the next area to be united with Meath.

rights.jpg

Casus belli, a claim on the title, was grabbed the same day, July 25th of 1088. Soon the forces of the father and his three children were again united, this time in Laigin, were they last had marched to.

urmumu.jpg

The battle to be known as the Battle of Urmumu was fought in August 29th. The forces led by Conchbar soon overran the forces of Muirchertac, starting a siege and dug onto positions in order the Duchy of Tuadmumu was going to revenge his vassal's defeat.

As an outcome of the war was the loss of money. Trying to keep Meath's economy running, Conchbar decided to rise the taxes for peasants and burghers.

taxes.jpg

June 11th of 1089, Urmumu had been liberated, seven years after Conchbar had the last time had the opportunity to welcome his fellow men in Laigin to the Duchy of Meath. As adding Urmumu to Meath, Conchbar was also sure to get the claims of Muirchertac's to his other counties, so a child of his would never inherit the rights to his lands.

Later the same year, Conchbar suggested a white peace to the Duke of Tuadmumu, who didn't accept, leading to the Battle of Desmumu finally ending the third war of Conchbar.

---

Silent moors

The province of Urmumu was especially rich for a normal province, so Conchbar decided as his first thing after the war to build a fishing wharf there on December 1089.

Just a few months later the grandchild of Conchbar, Cerball, turned 18. Conchbar was still able to remember his birth, and he was already 18? The time had ran fast. Too fast.

cerball.jpg

Soon the fishing wharf was ready, and only a month from that it appeared that the building was worth itself! Conchbar's fisheries made a particulary good year ending Conchbar with an extra hundred, allowing him to be nearer of building a sawmill in Dublin.

fishery.jpg

Urmumu kept on increasing, it had become rich, but still overrun by Dublin in income, probably as a thank you to the newly gained three field system. On September 1st of 1091, Conchbar finally had enough money to build the sawmill.

stress.jpg

On the 27th day the Duke had his first signs of death. Stress overran him, causing him to get in some means confused and unstable. Not to mention this, it seemed more stress was to come.

---

Fourth war, Conchbar's last?

What was to come? The Duke of Leinster attacked Conchbar "beyond the grave" (he was probably alive, but the expression is correct). It seemed that many states, as Ulster on the scene, were paths crossed with Leinster, to be more specific, Osraige.

On January 21th of 1092, a historical messenger arrived to the Duchy of Meath. Malachy, the second son of Conchbar, the Count of Osraige, asked for participating in a war that couldn't be won, a war against the King of Scotland demanding the lands of Osraige.

scotwar.jpg

Not to mention the war was a pressure, Typhoid Fever arrived in the so well done Urmumu, making the province a bit poorer, thanks to it high economy.

typhoid.jpg

Conchbar's plan was simple. The forces of the father and the three children, with the exception of Malachy's forces, were once again gathered in Dublin. From there they were asap carried to Cumberland, the capital of Scotland, while the Scottish men made a siege in Dublin a little later.

cumberland.jpg

On November 18th, another huge message arrived to the forces surrounding Cumberland; Ulster had waged war against Malachy, who was now asking for help. Conchbar's answer was easy; He had had enough, Malachy just weren't prestige enough person to rule even a count. Revoke was made and Osraige saved from the hostile states.

revoke.jpg

April 30th of 1093, Cumberland was captured. Conchbar hastly demanded removing all claims and paying a total of 200 in war expenses. The Scottish man, not so bright on his mind, agreeded fully.

73 years old Conchbar and his sons returned home, just in time to understand they had now enough power to take another claim. We shall see what happens...

A nice read :) I'm too currently playing the O'Briens of Meath, although I've been just a little more peaceful. I chose to expand north because Ulaid seemed like a richer province than the southern neighbours. Also, my second ruler, Aed O'Brien, managed to sire 5 legitimate daughters but no legitimate son, although he did concieve 4 bastard sons(with useless stats, of course). Thanks to some serious match-making, he finally produced a legitimate heir at age 63(with his 17-year-old welsh wife :D).

Anyway, good luck on your quest for kingship! :)

Im also playing as the duchy of meath :) Yesterday I proclaimed myself king of ireland. The only enemy provinces left are the provinces of the duchy of Ulster and the little countie of Mayo.

Heh, it's not enough that we have a lot of people playing some irish dynasty, we have four people in this very thread playing Meath!

Aed was my heir as well, but he never managed to acquire the title of king. His youngest son, Aed II, had more luck though, he was crowned king of Ireland in 1125.
