Have been playing EU for about a week now and I have a few issues I can't figure out (also having made note of the thread RE: bad manual) . . . If anyone might have some helpful guidance in these areas it would be welcomed:

A)The game advises to NOT destroy all natives when colonizing if at all possible, but I am finding MANY MANY provinces with natives with LOW or VERY LOW aggression that the game will not allow me to even place a TRADER unless I kill 'em all! What's up with that?

B)I have also been noticing that when I examine a province in COLONIZE mode that even though it shows a GREEN colonize option (sometimes as high as 70%) that when I click on the province to place a colony the only option it allows is TRADER (meaning the COLONIZE option is grayed out). Any insight here?

C)I have received zero (0) Conquistadors and Explorers. I am playing on 'EASY' just to learn the ropes . . . does that have anything to do with it? Do I need a certain TECH level first?

D)I have watched a fleet of fifteen (15) War Ships get driven away by ONE (1) pirate ship. What's up with that?

Thanks in advance . . .

Well, dunno if I can answer all of these for you, but here goes nothing....

A)There is a certain cost to erect either colony or trading post. Are you sure that you have enough available cash...?

B)See above.

C)These are tied to your country. Meaning that if you play Spain or England you will get the famous explorers they had, whereas Austria really didn´t have a lot of famous explorers. It is, however, possible to get explorer/conquistadors through random events....

D)Depends on naval tech and dumb luck....Everythings possible, just requires a massive amount of luck!

A) You can always try to place a trade post provided you have enough money and the province is accessible.

B) You can only build colonies in provinces that either border an ocean (including the Great Lakes) or that are next to a normal province of your own (meaning that the city has at least 700 inhabitants).

C) What country are you playing? Countries receive historical conquistadors and explorers and there are also random events that give you them.

D) This is a bit of a bug...

A. leave a military force in the province (increases the chance for success). Put a trading post in next (also increases chance for colony success). Then put a colony in. If its a port, ship soldiers in on boats so they won't cause the natives to attack.

B. As stated above, a colony has to be next to the water or next to an existing city of yours. And you need the money (my usual problem).

C. As above, I can't say more.

D. Pirates a really bad. 1 beats up on 6 with better fire and shock values, I finally sink it (3 attempts) and three months later 4 pirates show up. I started another game (GC) as Russia. That is my solution to the pirates.

Pirates recover far too fast IMO. It hardly seems worth destroying them when they can reappear in the same or neighbouring sea zone the month after, often in bigger strength. This is especially frustrating when you own all the landmasses surrounding the sea zone. You can't station ships on patrol against pirates because of the attrition problems either.

Remember to check your maintenance sliders when fighting pirates. If you have your navy pay at less than 100% then your morale will be poor and it takes 3 months to recover after returning funding to normal. At 50% pay, you need a huge fleet to basically blow up the pirates before your moral collapses and you run away. I'm not entirely convinced this is accurate. The ship casualties from combat seem very low and capture is not possible. Having fleets of ships regularly disengage before sustaining even a single casualty seems preposterous. Battles do get more deadly as tech improves thankfully.

Pirates

If you leave a small fleet (abt. 3 ships) in a port bordering the sea zone where you just sunk (or chased away)a pirate fleet, they will not reappear in that zone (at least not that I have noticed).

Interesting. I've certainly got fleets going in and out of the harbours regularly as they explore the world. I'll try stationing some there permanently.

I agree with the others for colonising. When I do so I always will station troops in the province until the city is up and running.I will keep natives all the up until 5 agressiveness but after that it is tough to colonise.India has taught me that far too many times with my England trying to get cities started there.

Having some natives is great though as a province that has negative growth can go positive growth with the natives there when the colony becomes a city.

It isn't. There is a bug making pirate naval tech too high. Will be gone in 1.08.

Hurrah! Send the scurvy dogs straight to Davy Jones's locker. :D

I'll ammend that statement, it is still possible for a pirate fleet to enter a sea zone which is patrolled when the pirates retreat from a combat in an adjacent zone
