lets see because this is starting to get me and my nerves :(

I own a laptop, P4 1.7Ghz, with windows XP as OS. I've been unable to play EU2 because it CTDs all the time...and now I've got EXACTLY the same CTD problem with HoI.

Description (both EU2 and HoI):

-I can't hit "start" button, because the program CTDs

-Each time I go into "Options" creen and I hit "Back" button, it CTDs.

I repeat, this happens both with EU2 and HoI... I can't even start a game because it drops me to desktop first.

Please I need help. I thought this was some kind of Win XP compatibility problem with EU2, and now I find I have JUST the same problem with HoI (which I guess, is well tested under Win XP).

thanks in advance.

This is almost certainly one of several things so let's try them each in succession...

1. I need to know what version of XP you're running. Have you downloaded and installed SP1?

If no, dun Windows Update, if yes...

2. What version of DirectX do you have installed? Should be 8.1

If no, run Windows Upadate, if yes...

3. I need to know what your detailed system specs are. Please read the sticky at the top of the forum that says "IMPORTANT: READ BEFORE POSTING HERE" and use the "form" at the bottom of it to give me what I need. There's a link in my sig to take you right there.

and...

4. Update all of your drivers. In some cases (particularly nVidia) you may need to completely remove the driver completely before you then update with the most recent one.

but...

5. If you go to your EU2 folder and rename the AVI subfolder to AVI_OLD you might be able to play right away. Ditto with your HoI folder.

Let me know how the above works.

Note: duplicate thread in the HoI Support forum. Since the answer is probably going to be the same, pick one of the threads to follow, let us know and we'll close the other.

Thread re-opened... :D

Alright RAM...let's see if we can lick the other problem now.

Ummmm.... *thinks* :D

Let's see if we can nail down where the problem is happening precisely. How about we start from scratch since maybe we've missed something

What haven't we tried yet with EU2? Have you gone through the complete uninstall, defrag, and reinstall procedure? Have we tried renaming the AVI folder to AVI_OLD yet?

Perhaps you could give me a sort of run-dwon on exactly how/when you crash.

- Do you get the opening movies (if you haven't renamed the AVI folder)?
- Does the status bar then get all the way to 100% when the game shell is loading?
- Do you then get the screen where you choose between single and multi player?
- Clicking on single player, do you then get the usual "select campaign + country" screen?
- Don't change options from the initial defaults and don't pick a country that requires changing a shield...just grab one of the defaults for this test. If, for instance, you pick the GC and France and click "start" do you get a progress bar that shows the files being loaded?
- Do you actually manage to get as far as the start of the game?

Give me a detailed run-down and let's see if we can give you EU2 for Christmas too. :)

I remember... I had e-mail correspondance with a French guy some months ago... he had the same problem with EU1 as with Eu2, namely he couldn't get it to work, it just crashed.
He had a laptop... even a no-cd patch from SF (he had the SF version) didn't do any good :(
