What happened was this. Peter III of Russia (the nephew of the Empress Elizabeth and the hapless husband of Catherine the Great) was by inheritance the Duke of Holstein-Gottorp. After his premature death, the Duchy was inherited by his reputed son, the future Emperor Paul. Ownership of the duchy proved troublesome for Russia, so Catherine worked out a deal that her son's duchy be traded with Denmark for Oldenburg. Paul was Count of Oldenburg for all of four days (10 - 14 December 1773) since Oldenburg was promply given to the Bishop of Lubeck, Friedrich August, who was not only of a collateral line of Holstein-Gottorp but also happened to be the uncle of Gustav III of Sweden (of the house of Holstein-Gottorp)...
