Hello all, I am hoping to find some help with the performance of Victoria on my computer, despite the fact that I am not very tech-savvy (so please forgive me for being scarce, and try to be as thorough as humanely possible with explanations, :) )

I am running on a Windows XP system, with a Pentium III 1.7 ghz processor, having recently upgraded my RAM to five hundred something - to little effect other than greatly improving loading times. I am using version 1.02 of the game, and I have directX9 installed. My graphics card is a Radeon 7000 64mb card. This surpasses by far all the system requirements, and yet, my game continues to run slowly.

For instance, massive troop sizes (even in 1.02) have made the game virtually unplayable on anything but pause by the year 1861 (!!!), with days taking as long as seven seconds to pass even on the highest speed. Even with low troop numbers, the game still runs rather sluggishly, with pauses between every day that passes.

After reading up previous threads on the matter, I have tried the following solutions (many of which in combined efforts) to little or no effect:

-playing around with my graphics accelerations
-turning off the music/deactivating my AVI folder
-adjusting my screen resolution to that of the game and setting the colour texture to 16 bit
-changing the unit animations to tokens

I have even tried dallying with my video drivers: but I have no clue what I am doing, nor do I know what specific drivers I should look for. I have tried some three different ones, but without uninstalling the previous ones (does this matter?). Alas, I give myself into the hands of those better suited to resolving this conundrum. And I prithee; be very slow and concise in any explanations (particularly in regards to what I should do with drivers, ie which ones to get, what to do with old ones), and please, please be forgiving of my computer illiteracy :)

The new catalist drivers for the radeon came out this month, those are the ones you should use.

Leave graphic acceleration at full.
Lower resolution and no music(turned off in Victoria Settings/config program) should help atleast somewhat.

Other than that there is really not much you can do.
 
Well, thank you for your help, I guess I'm back at square one though :( . But hey, would you know what it is that I would now have to upfate in order to get the best performance out of my game? I mean, I have a processor that blows away the requirements, my ram now doubles the requirements, so is it just the video card that needs upgrading? And if so, which one would you reccomend Castellon?

Check to see if there is an update for your audio driver.

You could also try updating your DirectX to 9.0b
 
Could you tell me where to find the newest or best driver for my particular audio device, which one that would be and whether or not (if so, how to) uninstall my old driver? Sorry for this pestering, but your help is GREATLY appreciated :) oh, and merry christmas :D

Well, I updated all my possible drivers and such... but to little avail. I ended up tweaking around the economy so now the computer has much much much smaller armies, but the issue of the slight pause between each day has not been resolved (unless, this is what everyone experiences?). The unit animations, sound, everything runs fine except that bloody pause between each day. But thank you very much for your help, I am sure it has helped a host of other programs on my computer :) .

If there is any other possibility of what may be wrong, please respond, I would ever so like to play this game with it running properly.

If you do a fresh boot of your system and hit Ctrl-Alt-Del, and look at processes tab, Copy and paste the results here.
 
It seems that I cannot do a cut and paste of that information - when I right click there's no copy/paste option. If you would like, I could type it out in full, but it is quite a long list. I do not know if that is part of the problem, as it says at the bottom that it is only taking up some 4% of my computer usage.

Absolutely nothing is runing under applications - except of course for this webpage browser :) . And I would like to know; is it customary for people to experience a slight pause between each day? I mean, it is really small now, but it is still there.

Reformatting is a little extreme if the delay is not a big deal.
But you should defrag your drive every once and a while.
 
Note that if you have two HD's and enough space on the 2nd one and your disk is highly fragmented it is much quicker to cut and paste everything (Except the windows file) onto the 2nd HD and back again.
 
And just hope you do not get a power outage half way between. :)

Thank you very much Castellon for being willing to take this up again :) . Victoria is a truly smashing game, and I would like to see it would properly on my PC.

In the thread wherein you told me to ressurect this one, I thought I should mention that I do have a similar problem with HoI, it gets significantly laggier when the war is in full force and all the armies are in action.
