Well looking over the thread lets sort a few things first.
Have you upgraded to 1.03?
Have you upgraded directX to 9.0B?

Yes, I've upgraded to Victoria 1.03 and directx 9.0b

peace,

p.s. I've also noticed that my computer in general runs a little more slowly than I should think it should, especially with a bloody Pentium 4 1.7 Ghz processor and 512 RAM. I've ran virus cleanups, I've defragged, I've cleared off spyware, and I cleaned up most of the space on my computer so that I now have nearly 3/4 of free space (on a 37 gigabyte computer), and yet still it runs like this.

I hate to say it but the best thing for you to do is a reformat.
I do it myself every once in a while. It cleans the system out and gets rid of everything you are not using, and gets rid of old drivers, registry entries, ...

Back up evrything you want to keep, like Word pro documents, save games, downloaded things... then reformat the drive and put a fresh copy of the operating system on. Then update it and the drivers.
Then install Vic and see how it runs.

Believe it or not, I've tried that before too, and it would be all too risky to try it now again because of the virus protection software I had installed when I had a virus removed a week ago. I don't have a cd or any of the installation stuff required for that software, and judging by how hard my computer was hit when I got those viruses, I wouldn't want to be without that program (pc-cillin)

peace,

Actually, in retrospect, I haven't formatted in ages and I've played around with drivers and stuff alot, so I think I will do that over this weekend to see if it works. I'll post if there is any improvement, but if you can think of anything else, please do tell :)

thank you, and peace,

Well since you had viruses I would definately do it. Never trust those AV programs to get everything.

Well, I formatted my computer, updated my drivers, set Victoria up to optimum performance (renaming AVI, disabling music, etc) and the verdict is in;

nothing has changed!

What the bloody 'ell is wrong?!

This is just too frustrating, I mean, it's quite ridiculous. If you can crack this nut Castellon, I should owe you another 60$ that I paid for the game in the first place.

peace,

Well I just don't know, If your other programs run fine and it is just Paradox games then I truley do not know what to tell you. If your other programs are not as fast as they should be it could be you have problems with your CMOS settings. But if other things are working fine. Well ...

But that is precisely the thing, I notice that often other programs of mine will not function as they should, freezing and lagging from time to time. Tell me more of these CMOS settings, if you would not mind.

peace,

CMOS is the operating system for the operating system so to speak.
Usually accessed by hiting the delete key while booting up.

There are several brands of BIOS such as AWARD.
It is where you tell your computer info about what type of Harddrives you have how much memory and the timing of that memory, stuff like that.

If you are having other troubles, I would get someone that knows what they are doing to take a look.

Yes, I have heard of that somewhat before ( though I never knew what it was). I remember that before having formatted my harddrive, I updated my BIOS from the Intel website, but that had little or no effect. If there is nothing else that you could tell, then could you please inform me as to what I should ask or say to a tech support person regarding all this, that is, if there is nothing I could try myself?

If this is the end, then thank you for all the help you have provided,

in peace,

Just have the settings checked to make sure they are correct, as I said things like memory timing are very important.
Without knowing what memory chips you have in your sytem it is impossible for me to tell you what the optimal setting are for you. That is just one example.

Question - are you using SP1?

Question - are you running over a network / wireless network?

Cast- Thank you once more, I will look into that should it be my final try

Derek- I do not know what SP1 is, feel free to enlighten me :) , but I do run my computer over a wireless internet network; could this have any effect?

peace,

peace,

Do you connect via a wireless router or does your computer handle all the traffic? If your computer handles the traffic then this could be causing the slowdown.

SP1 is service pack one for Windows XP. Its about a 130 MB download but does have some fixes particulalry for wireless networks.

I assumed he had installed it since he said he upgraded all his stuff after the reformat.
SP1 is part of the WinXp upgrade site stuff.

I do have the service pack installed, though I think I may have skipped over a certain update referring to USB hookups. I do not have the hub hooked up to my computer, and I tried earlier to play the game without my internet plugged in (the wireless unplugged). It had no effect.

peace,

Ya I figured you had, I am afraid my only advice is as I mentioned about having your CMOS settings checked out.

Say, I notice that some time ago you asked me what was running under my processes tab, well, I tell you this, on average I have about 28 processes running at once, and although it says 0% of my cpu is being used, when I do so little as move the task manager box, that number shoots up to around 32%. I wonder if this has anything to do with the laginess?

peace,
