I started up a game as Britian and I was happy to see japan get stopped in northern China. so far its November of 39 when i quit for the night and im getting a pretty good game so far. Before i logged out i loaded up as japan to see how they were doing. lets see 111 divisions 44 gar 3 hq 5 mil 6 cav and the rest was infantry. had 20 aircraft groups. unlike what a few others observed Japan had a stock of just over 3500 rares and it was rising n 1.2 a day. WhatI saw was japan was just about out of money had 14 yen. cheched wheres its being spent and what not going to military spending and tech is being spent buying oil and rares.

still Japan was holding its own even if money was tight.

all too true ... this balance is essential to the far east war
now JAP simply has no chance to have enough ressources till mid of '41 and that seems wrong. maybe they should be a preferred tradepartner of USA before an embaro event in 1941?
Japan was very dependent on others for getting their raw materiels. An embargo by some of the main suppliers (Like the US and Dutch East Indies) would be crippling. To prevent that from happening, Japan decided to take the raw materiels by force. Even in 1941 and 1942 they had enough stockpiled to conquer most of the pacific. Shortages only came AFTER that, as far as I know.

So, no shortages until 1942 (if Japan plays more or less historical). Once they go to war, they better grab that raw stuff quickly and hang on to it.

Historically they seized many resource rich areas, but they were largely unable to transport the goodies to mainland Japan. Their merchant marine was inadequate to begin with and was badly mauled by the US subs soon after. They were in big trouble, especially in 1944 and 1945.

Well, I don't agree that Japan should have no shortages before 1942. But they shouldn't outright starve either. If they can keep 80% or more of their industry going in 1941, that's okay. But not if that means that they spend all of their IC on money so they can trade for rares.

... But not if that means that they spend all of their IC on money so they can trade for rares.

+1 that's an important point!

so, how to get them the ressources they need (not only but mainly rares) without making war for ressources unnecessary?

more initial stockpile? more preferred trade partners?

what I would suggest anyway: build infra in JAP mainland ressource areas! (AND Tokio of course!)

Just what exactly are rares? I think that they represent different things for different nations. They are silk and rubber for the US, alloy metals to improve iron properties for Germany, uraninum for everybody, etc. Actually, Japan needed oil than anything else IMHO.

The US rationed gasoline during the war, not because they were short of it, but rather because they were short on rubber. They mainly got around the problem thru polymer chemistry and other new polymer advances like nylon, which also replaced silk shortages to some degree as well.

@kiahoga:
how many infs and gars had china in your game in end 39?

I started "negotiations" with other countries (non allies) to take a look around, and nobody (except for nat spain) has more than 5000 rares to offer, not even US or SU or Netherlands
I might have eaten lots of those rares, but I didnt know the situation was this bad

about "balance":
with ger I took Luxembourg in nov39, just to get this 20 or so metal deposit (ger gets it as a national province)
but when I annexed, I got 20000 money from them!!
thats 10000 ICd!
I know that lux is not a poor country, but with those ICd diverted from consumer goods to repair and production, its a really huge impact on my warmachine.

Okay Havoc I justlooked Natl china over they have 66 inf div 3 cav and 222 militia divisions. there allies have another 60 or so inf between them. Now i forogt to state earlier is that the nationalist in sept china encircled and destoyed a part of the japanese army. China also has of coure no navy left and 4 aircraft 2 tac 2 int. Industry wise 1500 rares and like Japan no money also they have less than 5k in every other rescource. Both CHina and Japan atm are doinga very good job of bleeding themselves white.

Addendum

Game is now in july of 40 Japan is slowly moving forward in Chi, and by slowly i mean a province every six months it seems. And they still havent gotten close to Shanghi let along Nanking. Im noticing some new events at least its the first time in an event the Iragis egged on by the mufti stabbed me in the back and join the axis (is this from the Core partnership?). Good show... even as a beta rc canidate its the best British game ive had in a long time.

I just ended a 7 month German Norwegian Naval Battle.

Dont know why but 3 Norwegian ships fought a german transportation fleet to a standstill for about 6 months till i loaded in as germany and ended it. Dont know for certain why iut happened but i think it was an error due to the german taking denmark and the three Norwegian ships wee on the wrong side of Copenhagen. It also answered the question i had of why wasnt Germany invading Norway.

Yes, already noticed.
Infinite naval fight...
For the moment, no answer.

I will make one soon.

I am sorting out initial trades, so the balance should be right in asia.

Yes, there is room for tweaking. Japan needs help. They do not get very far in China. Also, they declare war on the Allies in december 41, but they are totally unprepared. They are bogged down in China, with no units left for a rampage across the Pacific. I also feel the Brits have too many divisions. In 1941 Canada has 28 inf divisions. And when the US enters the war, their army is way too strong. US needs nerfing IMO.

too many divisions is a standard problem
most seem to have too many
eg poland defended with about 65 divisions, compared to about 40 in real life

I don't agree to nerfing the US. If anything, make them stronger. But they should not be able to field a large army in 1941, so maybe nerf them a bit prewar and then tune them up once at war.

Double names

I have already noticed two units having same name for CAN and AUS.
As I have also noticed problem for FRA and SOV, I strongly guess its not a problem in OOB but elsewewhere.

Someone once said it could come from name given in production queue...
Any idea?
