I just want to reskin the reptile fleet to use in my mod for IronSky until I can fathom how to use Maya... I duplicated & renamed everything, but assume the .mesh files are still linking the old reptilian .dds's. Is there a way to edit the mesh files? All I want to do is rename the files it pulls. So far I have downloaded 9 programs, & am on some weird ride on converting the files from one thing so another can read it to import into another program etc... time consuming & dangerous with random programs form the internet!

Quick answers:
the mesh contains the name of the texture files. Actually there is no way to directly edit the meshes (jorodox tool allows to take a look at them, not to change)

If you want to modify the dds , your new file must have exactly the same name of the original.
If you don't want to change directly the original file, you have to recreate in your mod directory the whole structure ( gfx/models/ships/reptillian_01 , if I understand what you want to change ) and put inside the new dds.

I have to say the change a texture without using the UV map tool is... quite hard (if not impossible!) unless you just want to colorize it.
