Hello everyone
The story begins when I tried to mod HoI3. As far as I know, the game was made in a hurry and is still unpolished. I tried to improve it by creating a mod with a Victoria-like dynamic flag system, but it seems that can only be done if I modify the .exe file (I’m not a highly skilled programmer, I just followed chatbot advice). I'm trying to create a mechanic that must be in the original game! Releasing communist Germany as a Soviet puppet with its historical flag is... silly. This made me interested in the idea of an open-source project.
Then I found the Project Alice and OpenVic open-source projects. From what I understand, the first one opens up the game itself (though I have no idea what that entails—decompiling the .exe, maybe?), and the second one is a recreation using the Godot engine. As far as I know, they are still in development. Anyway, I'm interested in HoI3 now.
I like the Clausewitz engine v1: the 2D map, its simplicity, and the fact that it doesn’t turn my computer into an oven.
So, the question is: What is the current state of any open-source Clausewitz v1.0-like game or engine? Does one already exist? What about loosely recreating a Paradox game using an engine like Unity or something "clean" (like OpenGL, C++, etc.) and open game files (countries, events, etc.) to rebuild the game mechanics?
And finally, I just wanted to improve HoI3...
