Opening Controls screen under options = crash to desktop

I think I did this to myself. I was having problems getting the game to start and followed someones advice regarding editing keybindings or something (this was before there was even a tech support forum, let alone a patch). It worked as far as getting the game to start and run, however I can't access ports; left or right clicking on them as instructed by the tutorials does nothing.

Attempting to fix things, I tried to open the controls via the in-game options menu, but every time I attempt it it causes a ctd.

How do I fix this? I've run the latest patch, which may well have fixed my original problem, but not this new one.

In the process of cut/pasting that in, I discovered my keybinds.txt was completely blank. Probably the source of the problem

Now I'm back to it not starting, the old "Application has stopped working".

So blank keybinds.txt = will start, but can't play
the above keybinds.txt = will not start.

any insights?

No idea really. I played with those binds through all the patches since vanilla and it worked for me without trouble... My Windows has Polish locales.

I would:

1. Try reinstalling.
2. If #1 fails, wait for NG-Juho to wake up and come to work in 8 or so hours.
3. By the time #2 happens, find log.html file in my game's dir and post its contents in here.

Try renaming the "East India Company" folder under "My Documents" to something different and then start the game. Game should recreate the keybinds file.

If the file still remains empty, you could try to copy the original keybinds file from "C:\Program Files\Paradox Interactive\East India Company\Config\keybinds.txt" to "My Documents\East India Company\Config".

Doing this got me back to the game starting, but me not being able to enter ports or do much of anything, and the game crashing when I opened the controls screen.

I'll try the old uninstall-reinstall later today

You need to give us more. Do you have any new information? Logs from the crash per point 3 of my first post here?
