It's been a long-standing project by some to determine how to price 'Mechs and their components so we could accurately value mods. The problem with the individual 'Mech files is that they rounded all prices to the nearest 100k C-bills, making precise valuation impossible.

I stumbled upon different lance compositions in the "lance" subfolder, and they were valued down to the lowest 1000 C-bills (actually, some with vees went down to single C-bills but we don't care about vees). There were enough of them that I was able to solve a matrix for each chassis, and there should've been zero estimation: all prices should've been definitive.

Unfortunately, the prices were definitively wrong. Either the lance prices included other variables like pilot costs, or they weren't updated to account for the price changes between beta 1.0 and 2.0. So unfortunately, prices still remain somewhat uncertain. Be aware though, that the lances you see in the files won't be the same lances in the final game since their valuation is incorrect (often about 10% too low).

if you think about it does the army, or the navy price there toys ;) down to the last $o_O
Yes. Yes, they do.
It isn't always strictly accurate, but as a contract archivist for a federal agency (and dealing with various budget records) and having known many Department of Defense budget people that now do other things... yeah. The accounting goes all the way to the bottom, with lots of forms and signatures. And stupidly big investigations when things go fiscally awry. [We're on temporary department head #3 for exactly that reason, actually.]

Yeah, my brother works for a shipyard and often complains about the crazy level of documentation for every single thing involved.

Yeah, when Beta 2.0 came out, I noticed that the mech costs changed without any changes to the listed chassis costs.

My theory is that costs were re-balanced on the main version control branch and then only the costs that were used in the beta got moved across to the old branch. Having enough information to figure out the cost formulas is one of the things I'm looking forward to the most about getting the release. (While I am looking forward to being able to actually play the game more than that, it doesn't beat it out by nearly as much as you might expect.)
