Forward:
Saudações, camaradas and welcome to my first AAR, not only for Kaiserreich or Hearts of Iron II, but my first ever. Though I’ve been active in the forums for about 3 months (or 4), I’ve never gotten to chance to actually play any Paradox game till just recently. In fact this is the first time playing a game on my computer in years now.

Now why I chose Brazil, well…how to explain…

I haven’t seen many AAR’s on South American Countries, and Kaiserreich AAR’s in the region are even fewer, if there are any at all. I’ve started playing Hearts of Iron Earlier this week, and downloaded the Kaiserreich mod (amidst persistent troubles getting it to work) the day after acquiring it, it is a pretty fun mod, and kudos to the modders for delivering such a good game. I’ve already played the game with Russia (going down the path of the Constitutional Monarch) and Italy, (as the bold conqueror and loyal ally to Mitteleuropa).

Playing as Brazil will give me a bit of a challenge, and possibly a chance to lose. Unlike my last two playthroughs, I will start out not having the resources or a strong base to build on. I am writing this AAR not just to entertain you guys (hopefully) but also, to chronicle my game, and if I survive to win it all, prove to myself that I can play up to the next level.

Like I said, I’ve only played this game for about a week, so I’m still noobish, I’ve still have a lot to learn on how to survive playing a weaker nation. I will be playing this on Easy mode (I find Very Easy, way….to easy for me, playing in the Russia playthrough)

tl;dr:
I'm playing Kaiserreich Brazil, this is essentially the first of it's type (unless I'm sorely mistaken)

I'm a mediocre player, so I'm playing on Easy/Easy, at least so I can learn the hard way.

So without further ado may I present to you:

Ordem e Progresso- A Kaiserreich Brazil AAR

Prologue: Intro to Modern Brazil
After the abolition of slavery in 1888, the ideals of republicanism gained much support from across all regions in the Brazilian Empire, and in 1889 a rebellion began with military revolt, ending with the declaration of the Republic of Brazil. The 1891 constitution was based on the U.S. constitution, granting considerable autonomy to the provinces, and under the first elected presidents the domestic situation stabilized.

However, Brazil soon fell into serious economic trouble, lurching from crisis to crisis. In an effort to alleviate these troubles Brazil's foreign minister, Baron Do Rio Branco, oversaw the extension of the Brazilian territory through a series of treaties with British-Guyana, Colombia, Bolivia, Peru, and Uruguay, which saw the country's territory grow by over 250,000 square miles.

Growing industries and a high influx of immigrants led to a strong industrial proletariat, and with these demographic changes so did Brazilian society too. The flourishing of Brazil’s export trades after the Weltkrieg contributed greatly to the wealth of the nation, but in the last three years trade started to decline and many fear that a global economic crisis could be approaching.

A blow to the Brazilian economy already came in 1934, when Brazil decided to intervene on Bolivia’s side in the Great South American War. Despite a successful initial advance towards the La Plata River, Brazil was unable to withstand the pressure when Argentinean forces counterattacked in 1935, and the Brazilian troops were forced on a great retreat.

With Argentinean forces poised to take Curitiba and her own armed forces in disarray, Brazil sued for peace.

Chapter 1: Brazil Today
Welcome to Brazil, population: 39,116,173 the largest and sadly, the second most powerful nation in South America, behind La Plata.

BrazilKaiserreichMap1936.png

(Is it me, or did Venezuela take over half of Guyana during the Interim period?)

Our Socialist Conservative Government is led by the 60-year old President Artur Bernandes, who succeeded Getulio Vargas and the miitary junta following their crushing defeat at the hands of Argentina.

BrazilKaiserreich1936.png

(He also served as President before, having been president from 1922-1926 The more you know, right?)

Our tech teams are top of the line for our time, they aren't that innovative, but they are good at what they do.

KRBrazilTechTeam1936.png

(A Strong Regional Power and only 2 Tech Teams can be used at once, I bet La Plata has better tech teams than this.)

What will the future hold for Brazil, will it go down the path of the Entente, the Mitteleuropans, the Syndies, or will it follow it's own path to greatness?

(I hope this made a good intro post, first AAR ever. )

You have made an interesting choice by chosing Brazil in Kaiserreich scenario. I will follow your story, good luck with your first AAR! ;)

Syndies just happens everytime, So i would rather see Entente Brazil, Becouse Germany backs La Plata.

Actually, that would be interesting, unfortnately, when I was typing up the start of the AAR, I kind of played a full year as Brazil, and well...you'll see for yourself soon enough.

As for all others: I thank you for your comments, and bear with me, cause this may get ugly...

Interesting!!!

Thanks for all the comments guys, I hope to not let you down.

Chapter 2: Weakening of the Right Wing

The whole mess began on March 1, 1936 when the Berlin Stock Market crashed. Sao Paulo, the largest and one of the more industrialized cities in the Republic was hit hard by the Great Depression. Ten days later, Brazil’s coffee sales fell over 30%. As a result, the Brazillian National Congress convened in Rio de Janiero, the national capital, in an attempt to solve the situation.

Avenida_Rio_Branco_em_1935.jpg

(Rio 1935, looks kind of like New York 1920)

Several economic leaders, led by Cesar Santos, suggested that Brazilian investors retain their stocks within the Berlin markets, maintain convertibility between the German Paipermark and the Brazillian Real. More moderate supporters wanted to suspend the Paipermark, leading to intense debates that continued for hours on end. In the end, it was decided by a 53-28 vote to maintain convertibility. This of course sparked protests across the country, however the government stood by its decision.

KRBrazilBerlinStockMarketCrash.png

(Yeah, you probably should've stopped investing. Or maybe that might've made it ten times worse?)

Liberal members in Parliament proposed an outlawing of the Fascist Parties. This one sparked an even more intense debate than the last, as it came into question Brazil’s Freedom of Speech. There were some comments that the vote will end in failure, so when the proposal was passed 44-37, the people of Brazillian community was indeed surprised, it was a clear victory for the Trade Unions, who saw the Fascist Party’s ban as a “step closer to worker’s rights.”

KRBrazilFascistPartyOutlaw.png

(On the flip side, at least they aren't ultranationalistic.)

Meanwhile, in Central America, the United Provinces of America, a union of the governments of Nicaragua and Costa Rica, decided that in order to maintain stability in their country, sent their military forces to Panama City. The remnants of the collapsed Panamanian government, deciding that order is more important than sovereignty, decided to join with the country. The following day, the UP President, Juan Bautista Sacasa announced that Panama has officially become the Third Province of the UP.

KRUnitedProvincesAnnexedPanama.png

(5 bucks says that Central America becomes a hotspot in the war against Syndicalism.)

The government was alienated from every segment of Brazillian society. Many left-wingers saw their movement of convertibility as trying to favor the foreign investors. These left wing protests increased as the summer began, and things were looking to get worse.

KRBrazilGovernmentPolicies.png

(You just had to say it, did ya?)

Half of the year has past and the people has grown distrustful of their government, will their Gold reserves hold? Will the government's decision help bail out the economy or make things ten times worse? Will the UP's annexation really spark a conflict between it and Centroamerica? Stay Tuned

I think Syndies will soon get in power in Brazil...

@Asalto and Zeldar: No it doesn't...though it could be worse, the Syndies could come in an start rioting.

@Zhuge Liang: Yeah, I think I have an idea.

Due to the fact that I have Chapter's 3 and 4 written up before hand (I did say I did a year IG on Brazil) I'll post them both up now.

Chapter 3: Revenge of the Syndicalists

Faction_Militia.png

(Emblem of the Brazillian Trade Unions, courtesy of Modern Warfare 2.)

Astrojido Pereira, leader of the Brazilian Trade Unions, spent the summer gathering followers along the Brazillian coastline. Most of these followers were immigrants from Eastern and Southern Europe, bringing the ideals of anarchism, socialism and syndicalism with them. The fact that President Bernandes sided with the centre-right Nationalists and supported the continued conversion of the Real with various Mitteleuropan currencies has resulted in the exponential increase of popularity for the Syndicalist party.

KRBrazilThePoliticalSituation.png

(You are seriously looking to have something horrible happen to you, ya know?)

Meanwhile in Africa, a disagreement between the Portuguese colonial government and the Free State of Central Africa, also known as Mittelafrika, led to a full scale conflict.

KRMittelafrikan-PortugeseWar.png

(The Mittelafrikan-Portuguese War, aka the war of the Green-Colored People)

The Great Depression in Brazil was grew shoddier each moment. The year hadn’t ended yet and already, the gold reserves were all depleted. The Real’s exchange rate dropped to an all time low. Inflation became rampant, and national anger has never been any higher. Strikes against factories started to form, and the government found it hard to maintain order, let alone maintain the construction of two factories in its northern cities.

KRDepeletedGoldReserves.png

(Hmm, isn't it sad...)

Meanwhile, in Eastern Europe, Russians, tired of the underhanded polices of their weakened government, began to embrace Mikhail Bukharin and his Totalian Government, thus leading to the birth of the Russian Soviet Federated Socialist Republic, (aka Russian SFSR or Soviet Russia).

KRSovietRussianIndependence.png

(Insert Soviet Russia Joke here...)

A Major worker’s strike took part in the largest industrial complexes in the south. They state that they will continue to fight until the Government gives in to their demands. According to research, 70% of the nation wants the immediate end of the administration, and an additional 20% does not support the government in itself.

KRBrazilMajorWorkerStrike.png

(The end begins, just like God of War III)

2 Months after declaring independence, and wanting to spread the revolution throughout Russia, the Russian SFSR declared war on the Russian Federation. Moments later, in an effort to prevent socialism from surrounding Mitteleuropa, the Mitteleuropan member states, led by Germany (and a day later, Mittelafrika) declare war on Soviet Russia. The Second Russian Civil War, has begun.

KRSecondRussianCivilWar.png

(Well, I knew that was gonna happen eventually.)

The final nail in the coffin for the Republican regime came in 3 days, and within those 72 hours, the Republic would fall in what would become known as the Encosta Revolution.

It began with a mass protest led by Pereira in the city of Brasilla, making his demands “Either President Bernandes will resign or I will go to Rio and make him resign.” In an attempt to prevent a revolution, the Brazillian Army and Brasilla Police Department cracked down on the rebellion, and arrested Pereira and his supporters, also known as the Gueto’s on grounds of treason.

KRBrazlVoiceoftheGueto.png

(And yet that wasn't going to stop what was forthcoming)

Nonehteless, even with the Gueto’s arrests many more supporters formed mobs and surrounded the Presidential Palace in Rio de Janiero. The situation was made even worse with 30% of the Brazillian military supported the rebellion. Facing insurmountable odds, President Bernandes chose to give in, resigning the Presidency on December 10, 1936. This was followed by the resignation of all center-right and extreme right-wing politicians in Brazil, both in the Cabinet and in the Senate.

ArturBernardes1.jpg

(I am not a crook.)
(Yes you are you corrupt *expletive*)

The following day, Astrojido Pereira, now released from prison, took the position of President of Brazil. With it, the days of the Republic of Brazil was now over, and in its place, was a new state, dedicated to the workers, the Syndicalist Federal Republic of Brazil was born.

KRBrazilTradeUnionsTakeOver.png

(A new future, a better future, a RED Future!!!)

Chapter 4: Score one for Syndicalism

Syndicalism has taken root in Brazil, the people are more democratic than they were under Bernandes, and with that, dissent and distrust for the government started to melt away. But with the end of one threat to Brazillian stability, another was waiting in the wings.

KRBrazilTheNewSyndieGovernment.png

(The new cabinet, what better way to toast a new president than a military parade. I just need weapons first... :) )

The Encosta Revolution had bought itself enemies on its borders, but the most dangerous threat came from the Union of La Plata, a pro-Mitteleuropan state made up of the former governments of Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay, all of them at one time, enemies of Brazil.

The decision fell to President Pereira and the new Foreign Minister, Oscar Weinschenck, to forge an alliance. They found one in the form of Bolivia, who recently fought a Civil War that led to a Syndicalist victory. The Two met with their counterparts in the Bolivian Capital of La Paz, where the Brazillians proposed an alliance. The last time Bolivia was allied with Brazil, it led to the disastrous Great South American War. Bolivia accepted the proposal, largely due to the fact that it wanted to protect the worker uprisings against the La Platan “Imperialists.”

KRBrazilAlliancewithBolivia.png

(Evo Morales would be proud of this moment.)

Elsewhere in the world, the Socialist Union of Britain decided it would be best to devolve the Union to regional Syndicalist Unions, for the first time in almost 230 and 550 years respectively, Scotland and Wales were granted self-rule, as autonomous states of the Union of Britain.

KRAutonomytoHomeNations.png

(And to think, in the original timeline, Scotland and Wales would've had to wait another 65 years.)

In addition, Mitteleuropa’s success on the battlefield forced Portugal’s hand, and Portugal decided to sign away its colonial possessions to Mitteleuropa. Now the German puppet state has become an African Superpower.

KREndofthePortugueseColonialWar.png

(Oh just go and collapse already. )

With the rise of Syndicalism in Brazil, will the country finally achieve it's long sought stability? What is La Plata to respond to all of this? Will the Soviets achieve a worker's rebellion and join the list of Syndicalist States in the world? Will Mittelafrika go die in a fire? Stay tuned for the next chapter!! :)

I'm also taking a chance to learn how to create events so I can find some excuse to make this AAR enjoyable...I hope.
