I have been preparing to start up an AAR with a slightly different method of play. I'm making this post first to ensure that no one has done it quite this way before.
I have seen AAR's started before where a player has switched to an AI nation as in the fall of the 3rd Reich because the situation looked like a way to get a challenge from the AI and the game as it was, was pretty much finished.
What I have done is taken two nations (Germany and the Soviet Union) and instead of switching sides when one side was almost crushed, I switch sides monthly.
I used the 1941 scenario since it placed me immediately into a battle situation and would give me reasonable levels of tech in case this system is to disruptive on research.
I must admit I was surprised and concerned a few times by what I found. Overall, however, it worked well. I had never gone into AI nations save files before. I hadn't done this so I could prolong as many surprises as possible about how the AI played. Now switch with the AI every month and you really see how he plays.
The next thing is you have to take over again after the AI has had your forces for a month. Even if you understand how the AI plays, trying to guess how he will play with your moves is something else.
You find yourself in a tug of war with Adolf/Stalin and military leaders/ministers of different philosophies. THe battlefield you can control at least half the time but you find yourself only able to influence production and research. You can get what you want but sometimes only at considerable disruption to the overall effort.
There are other relevations but need to save surprises for the AAR.
My big question is HAS ANYBODY DONE THIS BEFORE?
One of the big reasons I'm doing this is to interest someone with more play and writing time (and talent) to take this idea and run further and quicker with it than I can. It is an interesting way to play and deserves exposure.
All said first posts by end of week.
