Papal Controller Bug with Save Files

I was made Papal controller at one point in a game I am playing. Later, the pope died, and someone else was made Papal controller.

I quit the game at some time after this, after saving it.

When I came back later to continue, I opened up the save file, and immediately (right along with the initial "victory conditions" window) a window popped up saying I am the new Papal Controller.

But I was not the Papal controller when I saved the game.

Did the old pope die during loading the game? The event engine often "wakes up" during load and lots of things happen. And people dying are handled by events.

Sometimes papal controller is not saved properly, but if that happens routinely, it might mean that Pope has been extinguished, in which case nobody can be a papal controller.
