Not sure where exactly to put this but general discussion seems general enough. Hopefully I'm not wrong and if so I apologize.

I have a fairly old stock PC (I'm guessing first half of the decade). I've been following previous P'Dox titles, such as HOIII and Victoria II during production but never bought them not knowing if I should simply upgrade my PC or build a new one.

So anybody want to give a suggestion as to whether I should upgrade or build.

Download the demo's and see how the old lady runs them.

Choice between upgrading a PC or building a new one would depend primarily on the Motherboard, and secondary on the processor. The motherboard decides what you can upgrade your computer to at most, and replacing the motherboard with a better one is generally impossible without replacing just about everything. (If you replace motherboard, you generally have to replace processor and RAM too, and when you're doing that it often wouldn't make sense to not replace the Graphics Card as well)

So, if you want to know whether or not its viable/worth it to upgrade your computer, posting the specifications, and especially the Motherboard type, would be necessary.

Also, the topic of replacing/upgrading a PC might get more replies when posted in the OT forum. :)

If you say the PC is older than 5 years, then i would say its a pretty good bet that building a new one makes more sense than upgrading. (generally spoken)

That abosuletely true, and it is much cheaper than buying new one. As Strategist said it depends how good is your mobo, imo I would make new one than upgrade many parts in old one.

Ok thank you.

@Shams Probably should've said I downloaded EU3 and Rome but they didn't run very well. Very slow and laggy, bright side they loaded up very fast.

That is why I knew I needed a new PC or upgrade. MY apologies for not stating this prior.

Um ok so this is what it says in "System Properties" under "General" tab.

Intel(R)
Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.66GHz
2.66, 1.00 GB of RAM

Other than that I'd need help to find specs.

To check your graphic card and mobo and other things go to Start and then click Run. Then type dxdiag. The program will open and all your pc 'stats' will be under specific tabs. Your PC it isn't that bad and should do fairly ok with game like EU3 , your meet minimum and recommneded requirments, so if those games lags it is only graphic card fault. Check it with dxdiag.

more RUM
apart from the "RUM" i had a not unsimilar PC until bout a year ago, and it was, well, ok i guess, but RUM is clearly the bottleneck if you dont want to get a new PC.

You graphic card is very very weak, if you want upgrade your PC you really need to change it, if your mobo isn't show, the best way is to take off one part pc side, and look at what is the name on mobo. But if I would be you building new PC or buying new one ( if you bad at the first one ) should be priority rather than upgrading this one. What would be your budget ?

Hmm. well thanks all for the help.

Budget? Not good. Thankfully This isn't 2002 and desktops have become relativly cheaper to purchase or build.

One more question. To your best knowlegde, should upgrading the graphics card allow me to run clauswitz engine games with relative ease.

I can run Deus Vult with no trouble and like I posted previously Rome and EU3 demos can run. They load fairly easy but the gameplay is slow and sluggish.

Your MB supports AGP graphic card's.

The best AGP i could find is this hd4670 It cust about 100 $

You only have a 250w psu, and it's to low for the gpu, so You need a new psu. It will cost you about 40$

Then you need more ram, you need 2 gb, at it will cost about 80$

So total for upgrading is 220$.

With that upgrade, you will run EU3 and Rome just fine. Probably also V2. HOI3 will be laggy

There are a few good forums around that detail some good PC builds for certain price brackets. I use GotGames since it's a fairly local forum (by which I mean it's based in the same country :p), they also give a good rundown on what everything does inside your computer here. I'm currently saving up for the $900 system listed on that site, which should also be easy to upgrade in the future.

Always do your homework before purchasing a new computer or upgrading your current one. I rushed into the upgrade of my current gaming PC in 2007 and tended to buy generic brand stuff and things that weren't fully compatible (my cheapo motherboard is throttling the speed of my CPU, for example!). If you find a site that is more relevant to you and you find a suitable build for your budget, it's a good idea to use Google to find reviews on the components.

Hope that helps.
