Any chance there’s an update or timeline on this? I keep running into issues with CK3 on Steam Deck. It loads from the launcher fine but then will some times crash within the game for no reason. I’ve tried a couple different versions Proton, both the latest and experimental, but no luck. Also don’t have any mods installed or turned on.

Okay thanks, will do, I was told this was the relevant thread, but will raise there
If the launcher doesn't work, here is the place. However, other users in this thread have also found ways of getting past game issues (especially CK3 in fact) once the launcher has been got going.

Hoping someone here might have some ideas how to proceed... I downloaded 3.8/Paragons on my steam deck. The game loads to the menue fine, fixed the mouse offset error. However, when I try to start a new game it crashes at 90-100%. I have updated the steam deck and shutdown. I have verified files. Crashes everytime though.

Make sure you check your playlist to make sure your mods are off. Sometimes when the launcher loads on a new machine or after an update, it'll have every mod active on your Initial Playset.

Personally, I've gotten through at least 14 hours of the game without it crashing on my Linux machine so the game seems to be running fine.

Any update on the launcher issue being fixed?

Not sure how long these things usually take but it's been 5 months now.
Personally, the launcher has been working for me since Galactic Paragons released. You might have to validate your steam files or uninstall and reinstall so that it gets the latest launcher version.

Did your reinstall also include deleting the folders in proton's virtual windows installation where the launcher is installed?
No, I did not. Which files am I supposed to be deleting here?

I've checked the local files via the desktop mode of the Steam deck and can't see any reference to CKIII or Paradox's Launcher.

There are 2 files for Proton located at .local > share > Steam > streamapps > common

Proton 7.0 and Proton - Experimental.

Any help appreciated!

The files in steamapps/common is the proton installation. The files for the virtual windows installation are in steamapps/compatdata. Usually there is a subfolder for every game which is named after the steam id of the game(you can see the steamid of a game in the URL of the game in the steam store). For example for eu4 it is in steamapps/compatdata/236850. If you don't have any local saves, screenshots or other configuration which you want to keep, it would be easiest to delete the whole folder for each of the games which are not working for you. Or you can delete only the folders which are related to the launcher. I think this would be(for eu4. for other games, you have to replace 236850 by their steam id):
  • steamapps/compatdata/236850/pfx/drive_c/Program Files/Paradox Interactive/launcher/
  • steamapps/compatdata/236850/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/AppData/Local/Paradox Interactive/
  • steamapps/compatdata/236850/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/AppData/Roaming/Paradox Interactive/launcher-v2/
  • steamapps/compatdata/236850/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/AppData/Roaming/paradox-launcher-v2/

Tried all this, and there's no folder for the game ID corresponding to Crusader Kings III in the compatdata files. And checking through all the ones that are there, there's no reference to Paradox or the launcher.

Thanks for you help though, I really appreciate you taking the time.

So you have no folder 1158310 in compatdata? Maybe it is somewhere else. I don't know how the steam deck does things, because my experience is only with the steam application and proton on regular linux systems. If you have a terminal in desktop mode, you could try the following command to find the installation folder of the paradox launcher("/" means that it searches the whole system and "-iname" means that it does a case insensitive search for files/folders which have the name which follows):
Code:
find / -iname "Paradox Launcher.exe"
Or you could search for "*Paradox*" instead of "Paradox Launcher.exe" to find other folders with launcher files, but of course this will also find files and folders which are unrelated to the launcher

Nothing found when searching in the terminal either.

Guess I'll just have to wait for the Launcher to be properly fixed. Thanks for helping again.

This is weird. Unfortunately I don't know enough about the steam deck to determine where this stuff should be or if it handles the proton compatibility layer in a different way as the normal linux steam client.
Maybe you could find something if you try to start ck3 from steam and then immediately run the command find / -mmin -5 -type f
That should give you all files which were changed within the last 5 minutes. You can adjust the number to better find files which are related to the ck3 startup attempt and not to something else. But there will probably many other changed files which are not part of the proton configuration or the virtual windows installation which proton should have.

I would not get my hopes up for this, because it seems to be working for other people, so your issue might be specific to something on your steam deck. Did you already try different proton versions in the compatibility options? Maybe one of them works better than the others.

I'm thinking about getting the steam deck basically to play CK3 with mods, so I'm quite concerned about this. Any progress or workaround so far?
CK3 works fine on my steam deck, the launcher works, and the game performs well.
Others have some issues with it, so I am unsure what exactly is happening.
Even then running it with Proton should at least make it playable.

At least it works for someone, this is SO relieving, thank you for your input
