This problem was mentioned earlier, but was never answered:

After installing 1.06, the game drops back to Windows when reaching the 'Initializing audiofiles' stage.
I´m using a rather old computer (P200S) with accordingly old drivers.

Are there more players with this specific problem and what is your hardware?

Yep. Got the same problem when I patched it from 1.05b to 1.07b of the swedish version.

Tried uninstalling/reinstalling/rebooting, but the spot where it drops to WinNT is the same. Right after the sound is initialized and the (by this time annoying) music has started. I think that it is the graphics that are loaded after that.

Im running it on a ibm 600E laptop with a NoeMagic MagicMEdia256 graphic card.

So, the question is what Paradox changed concerning the graphics from v1.05b to v1.07b. And I cannot use patch 1.07b. Argh!!!

Yep Freodin, you are right. Its when the interface is about to be initialized the game drops. The music continues though.

Eh, no.

WinNT on a IBM 600E thinkPad.
Upgraded audio drivers for CrystalWare from
1.920 to 1.923 (released 20000807).

Still abends at the instant the sound in done initialising.

Hey, I upgraded to 1.07b, and have the same crash. I have a SoundBlaster AWE32 running in Win95. I think this is a SERIOUS ERROR which you Paradox guys let slip into a patch. So your new patch has a BIG BUG. You should really fix it fast as it is widespread and kills a given installation of EU, so that you have to reinstall it with a lower patch just to get functionality again.

Yah, Paradox, we shouldn't have our originally well-working sound drivers suddenly make the game crash. Maybe it is a problem with your new sound routines or whatnot that you guys put into the new patch. It would ne nice to get a mini-update to fix this. OTOH, I luv u Paradox guys for all your hard work. Keep it up!

What we have noticed is that if the drivers are not 100% compatible with DirectX crashes can occur while starting the game. EU relies on DirectX for sound and graphics. There may be other things causing this but it is as close to solving this bug as we've been able to come so far. Work continues to solve this.

Ok, then it's not the sound drivers. That change was made earlier according to Johan... Well, well... Back to the drawing table again...

We are working to fix this and as soon as we will find a fix for this we will post a new patch...
