Preface: I have been playing with factions on a Republic, see this thread. I have found very entertaining to put one party in majority of the senate control and high senate approval.

Observation: The dictatorship tree on the oratory inventions is only available to Aristocratic, Oligarchic, Plutocratic and Theocratic Republics. In order to enact the Request Line of Succession you need 80 support of the party that defines the type of Republic, except for Rome that you need the support of the Populares. Demand a Line of Succession does not need anything but the invention and triggers a civil war. This path is far from how Julius Caesar did it and the game can do it much better.

Suggestion: To demand a line of succession a governor with low loyalty and high power base provokes a civil war that the player will support. To request Line of Succession, a consul needs its party to have more than 60% senate seats and 80% senate approval. These inventions will be available to any type of republic and to any faction.

How:

Demand Line of Succession:

With the invention enabled, a governor from any faction that has enough power base to trigger a civil war can be selected by the player to demand a line of succession. Then the player assumes the rebel side control. Something like what @Ketchup & friends suggests here. If the player wins the civil war, the Dictatorship is enabled.

It is very easy to trigger this by supporting the opposite party of the character that you want to rebel and giving this character a big governorship, just like Julius Caesar with the Optimates and Galia.

Request Line of Succession

To request line of succession, you need the invention and the party of the Consul needs to have the 60% of the Senate Seats and 80% of senate approval.

This is quite easy to do if you look at the parties parties approval modifiers and the faction objectives. If you play to favor your party of choice and give all the jobs possible to characters from that party while sending the most powerful characters from other parties to small regions as governors, in no time you will have the majority of the senate from your party and with high approval. The process is great fun.

For example, in my game I would be able to Request Line of Succession with my Democrat Consul:

I have worked for 40 years to achieve this majority in the Senate with one civil war and many travails. But It has been a lot of fun.

On the other hand, the player may decide that now it is time for the Oligarchs. It is as easy as to give to a powerful Oligarch a big governorship and the civil war will be triggered fast enough. The player will side with the oligarchs and battle the pesky Democrats and allies for power.
