France much to manys surprise actualy had quite a number of war time casualties, 210.000, when compared to UK 271.000, Italy 280.000, US 293.000, Canada, 40.000, Australia 30.000, India 36.000, so when we think that France fell in a short time it was still a short "bloody" time as well as a bloody short time. Nos from Kegan.

German losses/ France
German KIA, French Campaign: 46,000+
German MIA, French Campaign: 1,000+
German WIA, French Campaign: 111,640

Erickson list very large numbers drawn into the Red army when they liberate Eastern Europe and the Balkans, still using the ill will facter that the axis left behind, Ukraine is a thorny one, depends on Stalin still selling the mother Russia story over the its collectivisation time again folks story. Also Soviets could draft 1.2 million per annum in 45/6 onwards. Uk had been disbanding good Divs to provide replacements for some time.

That's a high rate of casualties for such a short war. Would you happen to know the breakdown, KIA, WIA and POW? I'm hoping that a large number of those troops were captured and not killed or injured.

Might that be one of the bloodiest campaigns in history, given it's short length?

Don't forget there's also Germans on the other side of the fence (ie SBZ, GDR etc) who eventually may have fought western Armies in Italy or France so the "German tips how to crush those bastards" may not be available only to the west. I'm not really sure you could break resistance of the people by just bombing them.

Sorry i should have pointed up that this is war time dead. Taken from a book, ive included a link at the bottom that covers all countrys with breakdown of their wartime losses.

In addition in excess of 1 million french men are taken to the Reich to work in heavy industry, and to act as hostages.

France mobolised 5.6 million// 210.000 mil, 173.000 civ (1-5% tot pop lost)
UK mobolised 4.6 million// 270.000 mil 60.000 civ (under 1% tot pop lost)

economic change 39-45 in GNP
UK +9%
France -49%
