It's a ex USSR republic with quite good relations with Russia. Definitely better than Georgia.
And most importantly, it's there, simply sitting on the border with it's resources.

January 3, 2004 - Moscow

The telephone ringed, and before the bodyguard could pick it up, Kvashnin interrupted
- No, I can answer that. Who is it - Kvashnin asked - ?
- It's me, we need to talk.
Kvashnin recognized the voice, and only said : "Come here right away."
Some five hours later, the man two mens stepped out of a civilian car. One was former Chief Of Army Kormiltsev, the other, an unknown man. Kormiltsev knocked on the door, and entered the house. Inside, 8 bodyguards and Anatoly Kvashnin.
- Who is this one Kormiltsev !?
Before Kormiltsev said something, the men interrupted:
- I am Major General Petrenko. I work in the FSB. and I'm contact with Kormiltsev for quite some time.
- So... You probably know who tried to kill me, don't you?
- Of course. It's the president. Why do you think he gave my position to Makarov? I had nothing against changes in the government, but a coup! I really dont give a damn to what kind of coup is, it's still a coup!
- Not technically. He's the president you know. - said Petrenko -
- Yes, indeed... We gotta think about that...

I'm here. Watching things take shape with interest.

I'm waiting for da Killing! \o/

- Gentlemen. We are here because we know whats happening in our country. We are the few ones who decided to join forces against the true enemy of Russia: Vladimir Putin. This one tried to assassinate me, but he failed. Now, we must prepare. We have a contact inside their lines. He's FSB Colonel Petrenko, to my left. We got an army group close to Moscow in our side, commanded by General Kormiltsev. So we must decide what to do.
- First, do we really know what kind of thing we are fighting? - asked Anatoliy Serdyukov, one of the groups masterminds and, well... the money -
- We are dealing with something that is a coup, but not officially. Why? Because it's led by the president himself. He has a good number of supporters, and strong ones. The recently promoted Chief Of Staff Makarov, General Yuri Baluyevsky... He probably has even some spetsnaz at his side.
- Hmm... Thats bad. Do we know what they attempt to do?
- Not exactly. Maybe install a dictatorship, or centralize the government... We gotta find info about that.
- I have a suggestion - It was Rear Admiral Ivanov speaking - : we gather intel about their strike, and we wait. So, when it comes we will repel them and be strong to counterattack.
- Yes that's indeed a good idea - said Kormiltsev - . Our troops must be ready to move in to secure Moscow really fast. If the capital falls, the whole country will too.
- Yes yes gentlemen... Now let's end this here. And remember, we must stop them!

Down with the rebels! They would destroy the unity of Mother Russia.

Try again maybe?

February 4, 2004

The street was empty, the only lights came from the lampposts and from the buildings of the heart of Moscow. The wind was harsh, and the snow was slowly starting to fall from the sky. A little light flashed in a corner, three times. The answer was quick. A man, dressed in an overcoat, walked towards the corner, where another one was waiting for him.

-Do you have the info?
-Yes. Take it, quick. I dont wanna freeze, you know.
-Interesting... Well this doesn't make any sense. Hey, who are you?

Someone suddenly appeared, and two shots were heard. One in the head of each man. The misterious assassin picked the info, and a car quickly passed, and he entered.

February 5, some miles away from Moscow

The peasant heard a noise that grew gradually. Then he started to see silhouettes on the horizon, and in some seconds, more than a dozen military helicopters passed over him. They were clearly going to Moscow. A scream came from inside his house. It was his daughter:

-Daddy, daddy, look at this! Something wrong is going in Moscow. It's all over the news.

Rapidly, he entered his house. The TV reporter, with maximum volume, was screaming:

-A tank brigade is passing trough the red square, moving probably towards the Duma! We still don't know what is going oh shit! He just fired the gun in that house! Come on, we gotta get out here!

The signal went off, and the wife appeared, while the daughter, clearly shocked, kept asking his father what to do. The 50-year old farmer, used to revolutions, just said:
-We wait. As we did all those years, we wait.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

19:00, Moscow.

The gunfire could be heard just some blocks away. There was heavy fighting on the Red Square. The seven soldiers kept running trough the street. They were only one of the many platoons ordered to flank the Red Square, secure it, and hold it until the Spetsnaz regiment arrived. Everything was going well, until Cpt. Petrov ordered the squad to take cover. They were lucky the BMP coming up the street didn't spot them.

-Captain! That BMP will be a problem. Maybe we could use grenades?
- Yes, but he must approach us, or it would be suicide. This must now take too much time. We must secure the square fast, or the Spetsnaz will arrive in the middle of the fight and get slaughtered. Let's wait, at least a bit...

The BMP was slowly moving up the road, now some fifty meters away from Petrov's squad. They were all pretty scared, but they had to do it. When the vehicle was just a building a way they rose and fired almost ten grenade from their launchers. The vehicle was set on fire, while four burning soldiers came out of the back of the vehicle. Petrov and his men just watched that horrific show, until Pvt. Lebedev shot the poor enemy soldiers.

-What is happening here! - he said -, We were just watching out countrymen being burned alive!
-This is war Lebedev. You've seen nothing. Now let's move.
-Bu..bu..but
-Shut up Lebedev. We must finish what we started.

---------------------------------------

Some miles to the north, inside a Spetsnaz Mi-8 helicopter

-What did you said Dmitri?? There's too much noise!
-The enemy managed to convince the Duma to support them! The 90th tank brigade secured the red square, and right now our troops are trying to drive them off!
-Damn It! Change course right now! To the Duma building. We cut the snake's head, the rest dies together.
-Yes, General!

February 5, 19:27, Checkpoint to National Duma

A military truck stopped at the checkpoint. Inside, some twenty armed men. The guard, freezing in the cold, asked the password. The answer was swift and brutal: His head was pierced by a bullet, coming from a silenced pistol. The truck moved to the door of the Duma building, and FSB Colonel Petrenko left it, and moved towards the last checkpoint, at the doors of the parliament.

-Who are you? - said the guard, clearly irritated at having to leave his guard house in the cold-
-Colonel Vladimir Petrenko, Federal Security Service. I have an order from Field Marshall Kormiltsev.
-Lemme see it.
-No. it is top secret. Call Serdyukov here, please.
-What's the password?
-Woodpecker

Petrenko waited for five minutes, and then the door opened. Anatoliy Serdyukov stepped out of the building, with five bodyguards.

-Colonel Petrenko! Let me see the message.

Top Secret: I've managed to send a brigade of Spetsnaz to guarantee the security of the Duma. They will arrive in twelve Mi-8 helicopters, escorted by four Mi-28s. They're commanded by Colonel Bilyaletdinov, he knows the password. With those reinforcements, the traitors will have no chance.

Nikolai Kormiltsev, Field Marshall of the Russian Federation Army Ground Forces.

In the top of one of the Kremlin towers, 19:35

-We are back with live images of the conflict in the Red Square. We just managed to enter one of the Kremlin towers to work from a secure location. The battle is still raging ferociously, with burning tanks and corpses all over the square. It seems we are facing a crisis similar to the 1993 constutional crisis. Troops loyal to the Duma secured the square early at the morning, and the fight started around midday. We still don't know who is other force exactly. Some say the president is trying to overtrow the Duma, and set up a new government system. If that's the true, he clearly have the support of large elements of the Army, notably the Chief of Staff Makarov. Some even say he sided with the Communist Party of Gennady Zyuganov, but we have still have no reliable source. Now I will leave you with some images of the battle.
