- an Antiquity Modification

As it says on the tin, really. Just a placeholder (for now...)

This mod is essentially the substance of something I had discussed on the forums long before Rome was released, and should - hopefully, eventually ;) - involve extending the game's current borders to the Indus in the east, and the southern tip of the Arabian peninsula in the south. Effectively, this means almost doubling the size of the map southeastwards. For obvious reasons, little or no expansion need be done to the north or west, though I shall of course endeavour to increase the number of provinces within the confines of the current map.

With any luck, I should be able to get something done before Paradox make an official expansion of it. :p

So, why Persepolis?

Well, it was known as Parsa, or جمشید/پارسه, The City of Persians, and was the ceremonial & administrative capital of ancient Persia.

After much deliberation, I have finally settled on 559 BC as our start date. This is of course the traditional date of the founding of the Achaemenid empire by the legendary Cyrus the Great. The world - whatever it may look like at this point - will come to an abrupt end on January 1st, 146 BC - the year Greco-Persian antiquity was well & truly replaced by the will of Rome: Carthage finally fell to Scipio the Younger, and the last remnants of the Greek city states were absorbed into the Republic following the decisive Battle of Corinth.

Naturally, this modification will cover the conquests of Alexander the Great and his generals, the expansion & fragmentation of his short-lived Macedonian empire, and of course the rise and fall of such successor states as the Seleucid and Ptolemaic dynasties; not to mention the likes of Rome, Carthage and the various Gallic tribes in France and the British Isles, &c.

As the name suggests, the focus of this mod will be very much on the rise of the Achaemenid empire. Whilst different dates and bookmarks will also show the historical expansion of the other great powers of the time (and they will all be playable, obviously), I intend to construct this mod from the Persian perspective. In a sentence, expect to see Persia as the single most dominant force in Persepolis as one would Rome in the vanilla game. :)

It's perhaps worth noting that this will be an almost continuous work-in-progress, as there's lots to do, and I'm afraid at present my map-editing skills are rather non-existent. I shall, however, try my best to get a move on with the map, by means of a great deal of trial & error.

I shall also create (or, rather, ask a gifted artist to create) new sprites for these realms, and find as many relevant historical sources as possible in order to create the various flags I need.

If anyone is interested in where they think this modification might be going, please subscribe to this rather lonely thread, and let me know what you may be able to do to help - and remember, slow & steady wins the race... ;)

Thank you for your enthusiasm... ... ... .... . . . . . :p

I dare say I could get some sort of poorly-put together beta out in reasonable time, but the main and unfortunately rather time-consuming aspect of the mod will be the map. If I were Kasperus (which I'm not, by the way), it wouldnt be much of a problem. The fact is, I've never done map work before, so I'm learning as I go. ;)

I don't really want to release a rushed, largely inadequate version of the mod on the current map - which, out of interest, the city of Persepolis isn't even on - so I think I would rather take my time and release a somewhat stable beta when I've managed to piece together a working map. This will take quite a long time. From what I gather, the way the new EU3 engine (which Rome uses) works, I have to renumber every single province in the .txt files - even if I only added a couple. I shall of course be adding a couple of hundred new provinces, so it'll be interesting.

Well, quality is better than speed :) . I was just indicating interest, while teasing you slightly :) .

Are you certain? I haven't heard of this problem before...

I know you were only teasing. ;)

From the EU3 Wiki:

Next, create text files in history\provinces for the new provinces that you've created, and copy over all other province files that are likely to be altered by your map. The content of your new province files doesn't particularly matter at this point. I just copied another Japanese province. Renumber all the province files to take into account your new provinces. Because EU3 requires that all land provinces come before all sea provinces, you can't just place your new provinces at the end of the list. I named my new provinces 1250 and 1251 (the numbers of the first 2 sea provinces) and then moved the previous 1250 and 1251 to the end, renaming them 1742 and 1743.

Hey, mandead! This mod looks very interesting! At the moment, I'm all tied up with a lot of real life issues, and I barely have time to do research and work for my own mod, but as soon as I get some more free time (like once school ends! ) I would love to help you with historical research!

I might be misreading that, but it sounds like you only need to renumber the sea provinces. To make a safe estimate, that means you'll need to renumber about forty provinces on top of the provinces you're adding.

A bit annoying, but less so than having to renumber 380 provinces :) .

Thanks a lot, CK. :)

Post what you can here. You have the start & end dates, so anything relevant between those is fine. All help is good help!

You could well be right. My eyes are getting old... :p

We'll certainly find out when I start editing the map.

Update!

Just a little bump to remind those who care that the map is coming along nicely. A fellow forumite has been doing some splendid map work for us, which I am now beginning to convert and polish as best I can. The eastern border has been decided as what is roughly the Aravalli Range in India. So, it's slightly further east than originally planned, but I'm afraid I'm still fairly set on not including India (other than the aforementioned western segment, obviously) in Persepolis because it means an entirely different setup as we move into the Far East, which frankly rather detracts from the intended scope of the mod - Mesopotamia and Classical Europe.

Nonetheless, we're well on track, and Steve even sent me a wonderful list of proposed trade goods, local alliances, and a few other things.

I shall post again when I deem necessary, and please do share your comments and suggestions as any and all help is always appreciated. :)

Glad to hear it, mandead! :D I will try to have some research up before the end of the week. It will probably be mostly the Kings of the nations in your timeframe, but I will try to get more information, as well.
