Hi All,
The purpose of this topic is to get feedback regarding the impact privateers and pirates had on the period, how it impacted english state policy, and that of other nations, and why the board game trading fleets and privateers needs to be reincorprated into the computer game. I believe this to be a serious omission that impares the ability of a poorer or weaker martime power in contesting the spanish/portugese dominance during the early stages of the game period. As I recall the sucess and prizes of the privateers greatly influenced english state policy verses spain. Anyone with additional comments, please voice, I believe that the trading fleets are critical and need to be reintroduced. A enterprising minor power removed from spains reach can for example grow rich plundering spanish treasure fleets as happened historically, and the wealth taken allowed huge growth in the navies of the privateer sponsers, in fact as I now recall the north african states entire economys revolved around the proceeds of piracy. Please add to this folks.

Most of the naval wars in Mediterranean during 16th century was motivated by desire from Turkey and Spain to halt the piracy in the Mediterranean world, made by Algiers or Knights.

I submit to that. I don't know if it can be done but reintroducing the corsairs and pirates along with commercial fleets would be a nice addition to the game. and add possibilities to hurt mighty commercial empires. Do not forget also the ability for corsairs and pirates to loot colonies and trading posts.

agreed to both your comments, the issue is just how damaging this was, huge as I understand it, so the omission of the trading fleets has a big impact, because it removes that option, the ability of waging a war against the enemys commerce which is the soft underbelly of any far flung empire. I think this bears serious consideration to reintroduce to the game as a patch if able or to EU2 or a add on, something along those lines.

I do agree, and In fact I was asking for that since quite some time.
Anyway, we dont need the trading fleet ( lot of code and game programs to change ), because the traders are just THAT.
But we do miss the piracy so much.
For those intereste have a look at my Al Djazair 'piracy' AAR ( quite old now ).

An a nice AAR it was.

As for the implementation of the pirates, It could maybe be done by letting them attack the traders in the COTs or loot the colonies and trading posts. As for the pirates, it would be random attacks either on COTS or colonies and concerning the corsairs, the player could chose what he want to do with it but providing a CB to the owner of the trader or colonie attacked, if he decide to use it against a neutral country. The probability of the appearance of pirates should also be variable depending of the area and the wealth of the COT (the richer should attract more pirates).

Just some ideas. :)
