Please assist with black screen problem.

I recently purchased Victoria from gogamer.com. My problem is that whenever I try to play Victoria through the shortcut or D:\ drive it either:
A. Goes to a black screen or B. Doesn't load. I.E. the hourglass will spin for awhile and then stop as I though I told it to do nothing.

My system stats are:

Windows 98

16-bit graphics card

and that's pretty much all I know. Dxdiag for some odd reason will not run and do what I described as in the porblem of B. Also I am VERY computer illeterate so please if your solutions go into any technological items please keep it very basic and step by step. Basically explain as though you explaining it to someone who had only been using a computer for about a month.

EDIT: Also my files in most if not all of the Victoria archive things have Archive on thier properties.

First thing to try:
1) Rename your Victoria AVI folder to AVI_back.
2) Right click on windows desktop select properties then settings and Set color depth to 16BIT.
