Better add my voice, very very slow all day yesterday ( 26\02\2011) almost impossible to log in, back to normal today the 27th.

Working now, yep. Good to have forums that I can read...

Start a new thread with your permission problems, letting me know what exact thread you are trying to post to, and I will help you out.
Make the thread in the "Forum help" sub forum.

This forum has become so slow that I click on a link and then go browse some other sites instead of waiting for the page to load.

PS. Oh the irony. I clicked on the "Post Quick Reply" to post this and I got message saying "The server is too busy at the moment. Please try again later."

This forum is mega slow. I often load up and complete checking of other websites before this on is loaded. :(

But some other forums are notably worse then this one, Bethsoda forums have a 200 post limit on all threads and a 60 seconds time limit before you can post, be grateful! Or else you can say goodbye to "Strange Screenshots" and "Post Your Empire" threads.

Slowness again today, sometimes it's not even reachable, sometimes just "Server too busy" appears.

BTW is the board software really the outdated 4.04? AFAIR the 4.0x branch is actually at 4.09, probably with tons of security fixes.
I hope the underlying programs like PHP and similar stuff are at least somewhat recent.

It gets worse and worse. A bit embarrassing for a software developer to fail to get an internet forum working!

Indeed, for the last couple of evenings, i've had the return of the dreaded "server busy" message. I hope you manage to solve this.

Each one of the new updates requre a total remake of all templates. That is an insane amount of work, especially for me, I'm no CSS/web guru. Before we had 4.04 though, we were at 3.7. That was like four years ago, so I don't think this is that outdated.

I agree, which is why we will be moving the forum to an awesome server with a phat SSD-raid set of harddrives. This will all happen in a couple of weeks or less, so I hope that will be the trick. Every other thing is optimized through the teeth. The rest of the server software is updated to the very latest versions of everything.

4.04 is definitely outdated as it's an early/mid build of a currently supported branch.
Are you really sure an update within the same brach does require template rebuilds?
-> I'm not suggesting to move to the 4.1x branch.
BTW event the 3.7x branch is still supported (or at least was until 2010)

Are there no other options to offload the server?
Maybe auto-disabling/removing thread subsriptions (this also implies no further E-Mails) for users inactive for more than 6 months ?

Yes, I'm sure. It requires two rebuilds on the way even.
All optimizations possible in the vbulletin software have been made. We have had vBulletin employees analysing our forums. All quick fixes are made, that is why we will be moving the forum, as I said above.

Damn, it barely loads a thread till it is fully displayed. Not funny when you have to releoad each site 2-3 times before you can move on.

You could move the forums static content off the forum web server and over to a CDN. It would reduce load for the static content significantly because right now the various little images that it loads take upwards of 30 seconds each when the server bogs down.

Then again this slowness seems to be database related and not really an Apache/Web Server issue. Hopefully the SSDs improve the IOPS enough so that MySQL doesn't get overwhelmed as much.

I also get a 404 error for the following image: http://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum/images/deepocean/forumrow_bg.png

Yeah, I'm really hoping the SSD's will do the trick. Your first suggestion would be doable, but that will come after the forum move, in case it is not enough.
Where is that image supposed to show up?

I get server busy every 9 out of 10 times I open a page.
