ok if someone cannot provide some help i am going to end up attempting to set a worlds record for the furthest computer toss. for the last few times i have played the game it will run fine, i will get to a stopping point for the day and i will save the game and then surrender. throughout the game i will often save, every few game months. well the next day of the next time i go to load that game i get an error message when trying to load it, something about database error, abort retry cancel? this has happened a LOT and i have tried everything i know. i will go back in time to previous games, usually with error messages in them, i will keep trying (each time my machine freezing and having to reboot) until i get one that loads, which is usually really really old. this is getting to be more than i can take - constantly replaying the same thing over and over. i have tried to uninstall the game, load it again and reload both patches and it is still doing this. can anyone out there help me with this please??? also the game is still at times crashing to the desktop - and i dont know why.

i do have the latest patch, 1.2 from strategy firsts web site. i have run that again just to be sure and it doesnt help. also all of the game files were started and played exclusively with version 1.02. i dont know why video drivers would cause a problem with savegame files - especially given the error message i am getting which says something about database error. i can check the video drivers anyway but i think those are ok.

Things for you to try:

-Rename your AVI subfolder (under your Hearts of Iron install) to something else.

-Check your video drivers as suggested by Ryeuken (thanks!)

-What is your OS?

-How much RAM do you have?

-Are you using special characters in your save game names (examples are !@#$%^&*)

-Are you overwriting the same save file over and over again?

Let us know!

Thanks.

sorry about the postings all over the place - the more i searched the more i was finding things and i knew i had already tried them or whatnot. anyway i will keep my meanderings to this one post. i am running windows 98, i have just downloaded the latest driver from ati, i am not using special characters, i will use the default name, or just a number, or "latest" - i have not been over righting them but each is new. i have 256k of ram (which i am about to send the machine in for a rehaul) i have not tried renaming the folder so i wil do that and let you know what happened. thanks and again i apologize for the number of posts

updated driver, no funny names, changed the name of the folder, nothing changed - i am still getting a "database mismatched" error and then runtime error inhoi.exe

I have done everything i can think of - i can play the game, just i have to either start a new game or keep going further and further back in save game files until i get one that works. so far i have i think 6 or 7 and the latest 3 dont work, neither does the autosave.

Is it crashing at a repeatable spot? I'm wondering if there may possibly be an event that has triggered and is causing some weird problems. Are you playing an unusual country by any chance?

Are you doing any save game edits at all (I know that it doesn't sound like you are, but it's worth checking...) and using a more advanced word processor? (If so, you should use only Notepad or Wordpad since most others will had hidden formatting that will definitely crash the game).

DK: maybe you could take a NFG save game from him and see if you get the same crash on your system. I don't have HoI loaded at present or I'd offer...

Just what I was thinking, unfortunately I've only come home now and need to go to sleep.

dougmangin, send a couple of crashing savegame files to me at mike_berthold@videotron.ca ; I'll look at them tomorrow night and see what I can find.

update

sleep??? tech support isnt supposed to sleep! :) I appreciate your help with this. I am not editing any files of any kind. I can say that the error shows up at the same time or at the same point in the loading process every time. the little green stip or bar reaches just short of half way and i get the dreaded ding - and then error message saying database mismatch error. i am at the office now - which bites because its friday before a holiday but it is also payday so i had to actually show up and be a good productive little engineer. when i get home i will email a few of the save game files, or actually i will probably email you the whole directory, there are only about 6 in there. i should be out of here shortly after lunch cst.

Don't forget to zip those files first! :)

Don't worry...we're all volunteers so we don't keep regular hours (as you've undoubtedly noticed :D).

requested files

sorry i have taken so long to respond to your request, i have been out of town over the holidays. i emailed you a zipped folder containing a number of save game files. i know the three which are named with the latest date will not load. i have also figured out that if i am playing a game and it crashes, the save game associated with that game will never load again. i dont know what to do from this point, but it is really frustrating to keep replaying the same turns over and over and over

Two possibilities while we're waiting fro Disk Killer to check out those save games...

Do you happen to have EU2 installed on your system as well? I ask because I'm wondering if there's a chance it's making a call to something like \\<folder>\<filename> and this is somehow picking up an EU2 file instead of an HoI file. It shouldn't but...

The other thing that seems to have resolved a few people's save game issues is to disable the binkplayer pre-game intro movies by renaming the avi folder to avi_old (or deleting it). I have absolutely no idea why this would work (doesn't make sense to me) but since, as I say, a few people have reported that this solved the problem, it's worth trying.

*crosses fingers that Disk Killer discovers something obvious we've been forgetting*

Also what you might want to try to make sure your drive and files are ok is to run Scandisk or Norton Disk Doctor. Also make sure you have no viruses by keeping your virus definitions up to date. You also might want to scan for adware.

follow up

i have played the game a few times in the last day or so and i am still finding that on occation i cannot load save game files. i am seeing a pattern develop. the only time i cannot load them is when i try to load a save game after a crash. in otherwords if the game crashes, whatever game i am playing at that time is corrupt - i have to go back one generation to get one that works. so what i have been doing is saving ALOT so that if it does crash and become corrupt i loose as little as possible.

another issue that may help you and i am not sure if it is related is the reason or cause of so many of my crashes, which are very frequent. i usually dont exit the game, it crashes so often when it does and i have had enough, well that is all for the day. so it crashes about once a day, at least. what seems to cause the crashes, or what i am doing as it crashes is almost always related to airborne units, almost ALWAYS. either i click on them to load them, i click on them to paradrop, i try to move them, do anything with a para unit and id say about 20% of the time i do anything the game crashes.

so what i am thinking is even if you cannot figure out why the savegame files are being corrupted when crashing, if you can figure out why it crashes with dealing with airborne units that may be the solution i need. i dont know if anyone else is seeing this odd behaviour relating to airborne units but it is killing me. plus i have a large number of them as they allow me a lot of flexibility in both offence and defence. so id hate to get rid of them or not use them, but if i have to do that then i guess i can not create any more or in any future games leave them out.

let me know what you think and what you find with the files

yes indeed

I have installed both the 1.1 patch and the recently released 1.2 patch. Prior to contacting you guys about this I completely removed the game from my system, including all save game files or anything related to the game. I reinstalled the game and redownloaded both patches. I ran them both and I am still getting the crashes with the airborne units. I played the game for a short while last night and i came across an odd situation with airborne units. I was trying to redeploy them all so i would not forget not to use them until this is fixed. well a few of them would not allow that. normally you click on a unit, which brings up the unit screen and you can click on individual divisions to upgrade or redeploy. this was not available - the box to click on these individual divisions was not available at all. so i tried to move them thinking that perhaps that would help - but nothing changed. i tried to move them again and i got a crash - so the moral is for now dont make, use, look at, or even think about airborne units or the game will come crashing down and your savegame file will be corrupted.

Something to try if you have the time, just to eliminate a possibility. Do a fresh install, then apply 1.01, then 1.02.
Or if this is what you did originally try just the 1.02 patch.
Also did you install any mods like Bolts?

no i have not installed any modifications or anything else, just the program and two patches. i am going to completely remove the game from my computer and try to reinstall again - this will be twice i have tried this but perhaps it will work this time. i will let you know if it occours after i have done this
