any ideas?

ok i have removed hoi from my computer along with any updates or any file remotely related to the game. i ran scan disk and defragged the drive. i restarted the machine and then reinstalled the game. i restarted the machine and then downloaded patch 1 from strategy first and ran that. i restarted the machine and downloaded patch 2 and ran that. then i restarted the machine one last time. the savegame files that would not load before still will not load. and paratroopers are still totally screwed up. i loaded one unit onto a transport and clicked on a province to paradrop and i crashed. i guess i should just disband all my para units and never use them and hope that nothing else happens. but there are still those two phantom para units that exist but you cannot redeploy, upgrade, or disband. you cannot even click on the unit icon - it isnt available. any ideas?

Hi Doug.

From what I'm reading above (please correct me if I'm wrong) in each instance you've started with a basic install, then added 1.01 and then added 1.02 after that. Have you tried going straight from the basic install to patch 1.02 without doing the 1.01 patch first? In theory this should present no problems at all and may get rid of something that is lingering from 1.01.

Also, I don't notice you saying anywhere that you've made the change to skip the intro by renaming the avi filder to avi_old. I have been getting a lot of reports in EU2 support of really strange problems (of all types) that seem to go away when you skip the binkplay into clips. I have no solid idea why this would be the case, but if you haven't done this yet then please do. My guess is that after binkplay has finished playing, it doesn't unload correctly and leaves some phantom data either stuck in some registers somewhere or floating around in a buffer that somehow finds its way into the game play and even save files.

We really appreciate your patience with trying to figure this one out. Fear not...there's no way that we're going to give up on this until you're happily up and running. If worst comes to worst and we can't solve it sooner, Castellon and I have both made notes to contact Johan as soon as he's back and ask him to look ito this directly (not to mention that Uglyduck's obviously keeping an eye on this too) so hopefully he'll be able to look at it and point us in the right direction if we're missing something.

Regards.

Chris/MrT

grateful yet confused

i thank you for your assistance in dealing with all of this. i have renamed the avi folder avidisabled - someone earlier suggested that and now the little movie does not come on when loading the game. i have not yet tried to install the game and then run patch 1.2 only. i was under the impression that what was in the first patch was needed and the second patch was just additional. from what you are saying though i will try to go through the process of installing the program and then running the second patch only. i will reply sometime tomorrow and let you know what happened.

here is a suggestion that would help me but might send the rest of the natives into a frenzy - take paratroopers out of the game! :) its always those damn paratroopers, jumping out of a perfectly good airplane.

LOL! If Plan A...errr....what are we up to?...Plan H doesn't work then we'll advise low-altitude flights only. :D

1.02 will definitely patch straight from 1.00 so that might resolve the problem entirely. I'll be interested to hear your results.

Yes definately try a fresh install, then the 1.02 patch, people have had problems with using both.

ok i completely removed everything from my hard drive - rebooted, scan disk and defrag for a clean slate. i reinstalled the program and then rebooted - then i downloaded the 1.2 patch from strategy first web site and ran it. i then restarted the machine and played the game. i am sitll having crashes relating to paratroopers - although i did use them three times before i got one that crashed. another thing that crashed and crashed hard was when i tried to blitz - about 50% of the time when i would try it the game would crash.

one thing i may try one more time, and i hate to suggest this. i may try to delete any and all save game files and start all over once again - because i am still using some save game files from before (not another version just the last time i had the game completely installed and updated) - so perhaps there is something that the game from a previous install did to the save game files that screws up paratroopers and blitzing tanks.

i hate to start all over again but i am going to try - say goodbye to this game, as the us i had already conquered all of south america (that wasnt allied territory) every island in the pacific japan had taken, the japaneese mainland and almost all of china. i was about to take the last three remaining japanese held chinese territories and then move on to germany. i guess i will have to do it again.

i played as the usa because this was my first game - any suggestions on another country that is fairly easy to play? i have heard uk is a nightmare. and any ideas you have would soooo greatly appreciated. thanks for everyones help.

I'm having identical problems. Dell Inspiron 8100 laptop, 1.2 ghz, 512 Ram, nVidia 32 meg video. Win2k Pro, Dx 8.1, videos disabled, patch 1.02 clean, music disabled, all latest drivers and BIOS, system squeaky clean.

The paratroopers leave "ghost units" scattered around. The game randomly CTD's. Locked up loading 1-2 times. Units don't always regain fuel or org unless the game is rebooted. Save games come up with "database corrupted".

I've been playing steady for a week trying to make it work. About to give it up. Like to play it at least once all the way through.

There are still a few bugs left in the game, check the bug forum for details. We are trying to track this save game problem down but it is hard to do because it is only happening to one set of people. What publisher made your game? Stategy First, Pan Vision ...

i think what the person mentioned above is what i was trying to describe before about paratrooper units that show up but have no org levels and you cannot click on the division icon to redeploy or disband. its as if they are there but the arent. and i have said goodbye to my save games - i will start a new one this evening and tell you what happens

Someone just posted in the bug forum that if you save the game with Paras loaded you will get the Database mismatch error. Then if you ignore the error the game loads and then if you drop the paras they "copy" themselves so you have one in the province and one still loaded in the plane.

copies copies everywhere

here is what i have done thus far. in the game i was playing previously i could not bring myself to just delete it. instead i deleted al paratroopers and transports and just finished the game without them. that was the first game i had ever played and i wanted to at least say i had finished one.

i deleted all of them except the two "ghost" ones that i mentioned earlier. just before the end of the game i reviewed the land units summary and i noticed a bunch of paratrooper units, but i knew i had disbanded all but the two goofy ones. i checked and there were about 8 copies of each - or at least part of the program thought there were 8.

so i noted the name and i got out of the program and opened the save game file. you have no idea how nervous i get tinkering with software - i dont know much about it and i am always sure i am about to break something. anyway i found the area where units were and i deleted the section for the phantom broken units. when i restarted the game the units were not there and they did not show up in the summary.

so i finished that game without ever creating any new paratroopers - so i cannot say whether the problem was fixed, just that i was able to avoid it by not having any.

i have started a new one and i am playing as a different country - this time germany. i have not yet gotten to the point where i can create paratroopers - actually out of fear i have avoided researching those catagories. eventually i will have them and i will try using them to see if i am still crashing.

i am hoping that the bug you mentioned is the only problem. i can say that i DID have units loaded onto transports while i saved games - so that may well be the source of my problem. i will try to avoid doing that in this game and i will keep you posted if i have any issues arising this time. so far no crashes - although its still early.

again i thank you for your help with this. and i dont know who to ask - i am sure someone else has done this - but are they going to fix this crash in the future? try as i might there are going to be times i save, or autosave when paratroopers are loaded in transports (if that is indeed the only problem) let me know if you are aware that this is something that will be repaired in the future.

Yes Doug, we are well aware that this is a fault :)

It has been reported to the Bug Sorters and will be pointed out to Johan on his return from his rest.

For now the workaround appears to *not* have any paras loaded onto transports when you save. Sorry we cannot do any more at the moment but this appears to be a Vital Patch 1.03 fix.

Thanks for all the info and for pointing this bug out :)

This gives everyone some idea how hard it is to track down these kinds of bugs, Kudos to everyone who helped stomp this one.
