The defense of POLAND, 1936: Krzyzaki (Krzyzacy)!

INFORMATION
After play with various nations, I need a real challenge, I think Poland is one. It's 1936 scenario with 'hard'.

Before the storm
"Poland, 1936. The situation of Poland is not enticing. None air force. Only 1 destroyer and 1 submarine. But 43 bad equipped div., within 2 Geb. and 1 Cav. None fortifications or important defensive helps. The military staff is efficiently but inexperienced." - Times (Jan. 1936)

Although January, the weather is well. None rain. A small man comes to me: "Col. Sztein, Sir, they already expect you." I followed him to an underground room, near the nice oak down the Wisla river. This is here a really nice place. When you look over the hill, you'll see Warsaw and the closer localities. Really, very nice.

"Mr. Sztein, please, sit down. We stude your operations draft." I did, as if it not surprise me. "Oh, well." I said. "Yes", he make a break, "do you really think, that the germans would attack us? ... In 1938 or 1939?" "Sure." "Why? They don't have a large army and they're without any international support? None allies." I made a break, in order to find the correct words. "The germans are dangerous. Did you ever read their books? Their news? Their strategy is very offensivly and inconsiderately. In addition, germany has a stronger economy, despite all fascist tendencies. No good indication. We have to do still much." Silence.

01. Jan. 1936 - Krzyzaki
"The new supreme command of the homeland defense (SCD) commander Gen. Sztein communicates: Beside numerous investments in the research sector a new defense barrier develops in the next years. Name: 'Krzyzaki-Line'. A strong line from Bialystok - Brzesc - Ostroleka to Warszawa - Lublin - Sandomierz - Przemysl - Cieszyn. We need everyone!"

In fact, 15% of IC in build fortifications. Additional in Gdansk (Danzig) and Poznan.

Picture:
PL_02_09_36.jpg

04. Jan. 1936 - Berlin
"Poland begins with the building of fortifications along the Wisla. The name 'Krzyzaki-Line' (cross knight-line) is probably more than clear. An appropriate governmental declaration was already brought by Ribbentrop." - Völkischer Beobachter

01. Mar. 1936 - Elections
"Elections in Poland. After the hard German-hostile course of the government the current result does not surprise: Left wins. Perhaps an approximation to the Soviet Union?" - NYT

Why don't so many understand which us are approaching? They do not understand it, like so often so many in such situations. We have 41 divisions and all completely became outdated. More investments!

08. Mar. 1936 - Rhine
"Reoccupation of the Rhine country! Unbelievably, the area demilitarized by the Versailler contract was occupied by German troops. Only weak protest of the Allies. Is the Versailler contract stepped with feet? What leads Hilter in the sign? Large excitement in Czechoslovakia and Poland. The Polish president approves of the German action under protest of the own ministers." - Tribune

23. Mar. 1936 - Ethiopia
"After a very short war the Italians ran over Ethiopia." - Völkischer Beobachter

18. Jul. 1936 - Spain
"Secret SCD message: Civil war in spain! The fascist nationalists receive support from Italy and Germany. They have already 70% of the troops in their hand. The democrats don't have a chance."

In Spain there were already longer unrests. Over interfering the Germans I am however surprised. They become ever more aggressive and more offensive. No good Omen. I must inform our president! - It is disturbing that we still have no defense strategy. Only a defense line.

28. Oct. 1936 - Nationalists win!
"A jerk went through the free world. Will fascism take over hand soon in completely Europe? Belgium, Denmark, Hungary, Romania?" - Times

13. Jul. 1937 - Join the allies
Already second time that England asks us, whether we would like to join the alliance. I don't really know. An alliance with the Sowiets would help us more, this seems however hopeless. Join.

I am concerned that we set up since January 1936 no new troops, but only researched. Some new div. Spring 1938? ... For an effective defense we have too few divisions.

01. Apr. 1938 - Austria
The annection of Austria was foreseeable, not the methods. Two days before the elections invade and elections offer. That, in a democratic country. Again no reaction of the Allies. How will they react in the case of Poland? A strange time.

01. Aug. 1938 - First troops
After long time of research, we build troops. First 3 new Fighters (PZL P.45 'Sokol': 7 Att., 4 Def.). Great! I see that England developed itself fully. More than 120 div.! France and Germany too. Soviets only 146.

"I hope, everything ran so far to its expectations." Gen. Smigly said. "We did much. Look at our fortifications." (Step 3) "I think, we should be waiting. The Czechs have a strong defense and in an emergency could assistance us. In addition are there the Englishmen and Frenchman. All in all, it looks good." I answered.

Which he does not know: We need more troops.

Picture:
PL_01_08_38.jpg

30. Sep. 1938 - Czechs
"The Allies urge the Czech president to deliver the Sudetenland at Germany. Concomitantly the expensive fortifications along the border. On which side do you actually stand for Mr. Chamberlain?" - Times

05. Mar. 1939 - Danzig
"Germany stresses Danzig, Poznan, Bydgoszcz and Torun. What will the polish government do? They have only 24 hours time." - Denmark Tribune

Here we sit now and decide on the imminent of fate of Poland. Gladly I would rather play with my child... "Sir, Gen. Sztein, what is about the fortifications in Danzig and Poznan?" "We will probably have to leave it to the Germans. Still we are not ready for a war. At the end of of 1939 perhaps. But not yet." I answered. All look at me. I feel, as if my heart shatters. It is probably the heaviest decision of my life. The president, the whole country, rely on me.

"After the First World War only those attained Poland again their liberty and the entrance to the Baltic Sea. Now they must give a part. The troops of the Germans however remain nevertheless present. Why was there only protest of the Allies?" - L.A. Times

"The legal part of Germany was again incorporated us." - OKW

Picture:
PL_21_04_39.jpg

24. Aug. 1939 - Molotov-Ribbentrop-Contract
"Despite all differences under characters Germany and the Soviet Union a peace treaty. Additionally economical goods are exchanged. And the spheres of interests co-ordinated." - Tribune

30. Dec. 1939 - Storm?
The Germans stand before our gates. With a supremacy! The fortifications are not final yet. In the east the Soviets. Very awkward situation. In addition, Poland looks very ill.

Picture:
PL_01_01_40.jpg

Armies
I. (11 div.)
II. (13 div.)
III. (12 div.)
IV. (12 div.)

Corps:
5. (3 div.)
6. (4 div.)
7. (3 div.)
8. (3 div.)

Air Corps:
1. (5 div.)

Build:
4 div. In 2 months.

In reality I do not have a genuine defense plan. I fight against a supremacy of 61-88. In the east also 80. ... I'm open for ideas. I played much states. Very awkward situations, but so one not yet. The line of defense behind the river is only a possibility, if the Soviets remain calm. And the fight with 2 armies at the same time.

It is disturbing because I am in a democracy, the org. level is halfed and need some time to regenerate.

Good night!
:)

You definatly need to edit the swastika's out of your pictures, or you're gonna face the mods wrath.

And, you might wanna garrison you southern border to protect yourself from hungary and romania.

There you are right. I will remove the Swastikas immediately, if I'm at home. I installed this Mod once, because I thought, then would it be more authentic. Meanwhile I forgot that it looked times differently.

Do you mean real that I am to withdraw the precious troops to the south? Hungary and Romania are not in the Axis.

:)

Dont worry about spelling or grammar! You have the makings of a good story here, great story if you manage to repluse the Iron Fist!

Poland is such a frentic nation to choose, play 3 yrs build up what you can and then wallop! A like fly being splatted.

I'll be back to watch how your war goes as Poland is next on my list for a Comicbook AAR!

Keep writing!

Sztein
The main figure in my story is Mr. Sztein.

Born winter 1899 in Danzig.

Like the name to assume, son of a formerly German family, and a family ethnic Germans. Sometime in 16. Century the Steins settled around Danzig. A reason, why Mr. Sztein can speak Polish and German. In the course of the wars and changes, as well as neighbourhood and marriages, they became ever Polish and sometime a family member exchanged 'sz' against 's'.

Before the Great War the young Sztein (at that time Russian) fled to the USA. With 16 J. he came to his relatives. Its uncle was an archaeologist and carried him on his travels to China. There Sztein stayed several years and received only at the edge the First World War. Meanwhile he learned much over the asian culture, languages and history. Later did he say that 'Sun Tsu - The Art of War' and 'Musashi - The five rings' coined / shaped him.

With 20 he left China and visited on recommendation a college in Los Angeles, later the Harvard University. With 28 J. it belonged to the oldest graduates of the class.

His strong interest in military and sciences of history made him famous. At the 'Golden Twenties' he traveled back to Poland. He was inspired by the democratic spirit and the prosperity in new Poland. He took immediately many attempts to take a part in the social and political changings. Help where he can to further-develop the democracy. Nevertheless was the detachment of the Russian realm for a not a long time ago, and the Soviets did not work particularly much promising. So that still much work was to be done.

Beginning of the 30's Poland came also into the heavy world economic crisis and he lost his post as political advisors of the 'Krakauer' citizenry.

From shortage of money, he lost its entire fortune, wrote themselves to the new 'Polska Armia'. After only four years he became a major and held many lectures on war guidance and tactics. He studied also contemporary theories, as from Guderian, Montgomery and others. In various regard he was confirmed thereby in the theories of the 'Sun Tzu'. Until 1936 he was considered as the most promising talent in polish military apparatus.

Storm over Poland

WAR!!!

On 04. Jan. 1940 07:00 GER declare war to POL!
The war became unavoidable. The large accumulations of troop along the borders are only one of the indications. Around 9:00h the martial law in Poland was imposed. Our president speaks about the 'Narodowe Polskie Radio':

'Poland, compatriots! Today, 07:00, GER declare war to us. Our disgrace with the transfer of the Pommern, the contract of 'Danzig', proved as pure blasphemy. They're criminals and liars! Fascist luggage on the way create mischief in Europe! As little is worth the words of Hitler as the respectableness of the peace treaty of Poznan and Schlesien. ... Our troops were already shifted in war readiness. Towards Ridz Smigly and general staff boss Gen. Sztein already prepare the defense. Each man between 18 and 40 is to appear himself into close standing barracks. The war began! Again the Germans try to annihilate us! Defends your home, your family, your liberty!

Our allied friends in the west, France, England, Holland, declare already war to GER. GER will condemn this day. The ENG's bombers will put the german cities in debris and ash! Patriots help! Defends your homeland!' - Polish national anthem brought in...

German troops at the crossing border at Czestochowa.

04. Jan. 1940 09:00, Warsaw, HQ
Seats over the command plan, while in the background active driving prevails. Ever newer messages will carry: 'Troops close to Poznan', 'Large troops in the south', 'Movements in Hungary', 'Air raid on Krakau ', 'Further one 12 Div. in the west'...

Gen.Lt. Malowski comes with a report on the situation to me: I fly over the troop information, anything new. 'Snows in the west of Germany.' Finally a good message. Perhaps that will be our rescue. The heavy German planes make us to bad. We need time for mobilization, so far only 50% strength.

PL_04_01_40.jpg

Before outbreak of war.

News
'Holland joins the Allies and prepares for the war with GER. Overseas armed forces were shipped already to large parts and are on the way in the motherland. The 20 holl. div. are mobilized and equipped.' - Tribune.

'All diplomatic channels were broken off to Poland. Despite my personal employment we could not stop the partisan movement in the formerly Polish areas. Also we could not induce Poland to stop their assistance for these lawless ones. Many compatriots had to leave your life with notices of this minority, to something that leaves the Polish people cold and even supported it. A condition, which we can bear not further. I assigned GFM v. Rundstedt today's occupation of POL. They will see which you of it to have at GER to scoff!

Further I hope that the Polish separatists leaves now your activities of terror and as suggested your weapons to deliver. There were first surrenders already.

I hope that the Allies, esp. England, arrives to insight that the support POL's was an error and discharges of. We do not preserve any aggressions against England or France. Please consider this. The attack on POL today is a war-preventive, anti-terror event around to safe the peace in Eastern Europe. Do not let fight a new war in the civilized world.' - A. Hitler, GER

'... It seems, as none american notices the war in Eastern Europe. Perhaps do some Americans believe the populist speeches of Hitler?' - Washington Post, USA.

'The Soviet Union accepts the German intervention in the Polish state and behaves neutrally. In Litva and environment we concentrate some troops to provide a political area conflagration. We hope for a fast solution and an imminent peace.' - J. Stalin, SOV.

bild_hitlerstalincomic.jpg

'No free democracy may bear such wrong acting. Fascism wants to seize also still over one of the last democracies in Eastern Europe. Fascism wants to seize also still over one of the last democracies in Eastern Europe power. So little the words of Hitler and its fellow combatants are worth! GER signed two peace treaties with POL. POL retired parts of Poland to GER, for safe peace, and GER risked nevertheless a war!

I appeal to the steadfastness of the German oppositionals, to the Polish resistance, to all democracies! Helps to terminate us the war as fast as possible. Now the true face of Hitler and its words shows up. The British Empire will not rather rest, until Hitler is relieved of its post! It led us enough behind the light.

The Allies, the COM, ENG, FRA, HOL declare GER and SOL the war! GER has four days time to withdraw its troops from POL, otherwise we will consider offensive measures!!!' - Prime Minister, ENG.

05. Jan. 1940 09:00, Warsaw, HQ
Again bad messages of the front: 'Strong GER of air raids in the south and Warsaw. Together about 24 air commands. Strong own losses. Own troops, esp. plane div., still in the starting period. To 50% operationally.'

A positive message of IV. Armia: 'We can successfully announce that the bunkers withstood the German bombs.'

06. Jan. 1940 10:00, Lwow
'... Weather storm front over GER shifts further eastward. In 1 week probably over POL.'

06. Jan. 1940 19:00, Warsaw, HQ
'The situation stabilized as far as possible. GER moves approx. 20 Div. direction the west, to provide one brit. or fran. invasion. Also the air raids for the time being diminished. Restructuring of the attack troops? Bad planning?' - Diary Gen. Sztein.

bild_warschauruinen.jpg

Seats in my chair on the terrace of the HQ house. A very beautiful house, 19. Cent., old building. Lying on a hill, two large oaks in the proximity. Straight now you can regard the sunset on the west side. Sky easily cloudily, a likewise pleasant sight, as the sun colors the clouds orange. If we would not have a war, I would be today at the Baltic Sea. Suddenly Gen.Lt. Malowski comes hastily on the wood terrace.

'Gen. Sztein, an important message of our secret service.' He presents a sealed letter to me. Is that the expected message of the large-scale attack of the GER? The attack, which everything fears?

'Army secret service, top secret. AFTER INFORMATION IMMEDIATELY DESTROY! ... And nevertheless, after long negotiations the British are ready to give us a part of your army.' Lean me back. 'You take over the command, kept in addition, further supreme command over our homeland armed forces. ... Altogether it is the I. Elite, II. and III. Pz. Exp. Army. Unfortunately the units are in the structure and in 2-3 weeks, the Pz. Army 4 weeks and II. Army will be 5-6 weeks available. Additional keep we, you, the supreme command over an air fleet with 12 squadrons, the I. Exp. Air Fleet. Hold out up to then! Further instructions follow. - POL G.Abt., command London, 04. Jan. 40.'

Look somewhat confused on Malowski. This: 'What is Mr. Sztein? Bad messages?' In thoughts I go through the possibilities, the consequences for the north and south front. For the Frenchmen and always dutchmen. I does not notice at all that Malowski continues to talk on me, until he places itself before me. 'You may step away Gen.Lt. - Please set a situation discussion with the staff on 20 PM.' I answer.

bild_invasion2.jpg

Perhaps it's a 'bluffs'? Produces from the German secret service? Not possibly. Probably the British troops land in the proximity of Danzig first a develop there a bridgehead. From there they would march to the south, to get supply by us. Three armies are nevertheless nearly 1,000,000 soldier. A loss is inconceivable. Up to then we would have to withdraw and wait on the suitable instant to move troops from the south to the north. In a common pliers movement we could possibly destroy troops in East Prussia. That, although the GER is better equipped and trained.

We hope that up to then the SOV front remains peaceful. We lose a two-front war. On the other hand the SOV army is for a war with stronger the ENG not ready. ... Excitingly. 4-6 weeks are a long time, soon we have spring. The GER could try fast conquests.

Info.: In reality I tried to attain the supreme command over England. I had still 3 DI over and wanted her not unnecessarily to waste. Such a success I did not think of it. In order not to keep it too unrealistic, I selected thus only 36 of the brit. 125 div., as well as only 12 of 40 all air div. A fleet I reserved myself to the safety device of the invasion troops. This is led back immediately after completion of the invasion again to the motherland.

08. Jan. 1940 13:00
Strong snows in west Poland.

'Today we must unfortunately admit that we lost the two provinces Lodz and Sulwaki for reasons of the defense, the combat situation, combatless.' - Radio Warsaw.

11. Jan. 1940 07:00, Krakau, 217. Inf.Btl.
'Announcing German troops in the proximity of Czestochowa sighted. Weak infantry and armored units. Czestochowa German.'- IV. Armia.

12. Jan. 1940 09:00, Budapest, Hungary
'To stop the Polish border encroachment, we declare war to POL and join the Axis powers around GER and SOL. The UNG parliament co-ordinated already unanimously on it. Further, in order to be able to achieve a better military co-operation, hand over shortly the army headquarters at GER.' - UNG State Department

13. Jan. 1940 05:00, Cieszyn, South Poland
'Announcing snow over widen parts of Poland - STOP - Only Cieszyn freely of snowstorms - STOP - Only cheerful one to easy cloudy appearance, isolates rains - STOP - I. Air fleet (5 Div.) successful air battle announces against 2 bomber squadrons of the Germans over Cieszyn - STOP - None own losses! - STOP - Own troops achieve full readiness of application (Org.level 48) - STOP - Expect attack from the west - STOP - Approximately 25 Div., partly armored units in marching-up position - STOP - OVER' - IV. Armia.

PL_13_01_40.jpg

A div. after Lwow (southeast) taken off. Attack from Hungary fears.

16. Jan. 1940, 12:00, London
18 troop transporter flotillas of overseas arrive finally.

17. Jan. 1940, USA
'With immediate effect we impose an oil embargo over JAP. Reason are the inhuman torture and victim of chin. people, as well as imperialistic power tendency, who will bear the USA, and no free nation of the world.' - Roosevelt, USA.

'... It is not any more than one act of the western arrogance, the gentleman company of the imperialists and colonial gentlemen. They want to destroy our idea of an asian hegemony, we will defy this. What cares us the mickrige USA embargo, if we have friends in Asia?'- Minister of foreign affairs, JAP.

'... For this reason we follow the Axis powers. Fortunately TUR give us right to move throgh their country. For this we are very grateful and will shortly take ourselves revenge.' - Bulgaria.

RUM grants BUL right to move throgh their country. TUR grants IRQ right to move throgh their country. ENG sends first Exp. army to FRA. Snow in completely Poland.

21. Jan. 1940, Warsaw, HQ
'Gen. Sztein, the Romanians attack us. Probably to the 2-3 corps (9 Div.).' Study briefly the documents, go into my room: 'Move the III. Armia to Lwow and that 9. Corps (1 Div.) to old position of III.'

'Strong fights in HOL.' - Tribune.

... Still before arrival of the III. Armia the Romanians turn off. III. Armia remains at the old location, 9. Corps likewise.

24. Jan. 1940, Danzig, Secret Service
'Announcing confusion and uncertainty at german troops - STOP - News of brit. fleet in Baltic Sea - STOP - Also with it 14 transportation flotillas - STOP - Landing troops, too - STOP - GER strengthen troops in coastal region - STOP - OVER.'

Warsaw
'A outstanding message Lt. Wlonko. Great!' I am pleased. 'Perhaps this is the turning point of the war. Perhaps we have a chance. We already received instructions and telecommunications frequencies for the coordination of the attacks.'

Later at a meeting of the general staff: ' My gentlemen. Despite the slowly disappearing snow there is a good message. The promised I. Exp. Army of the British arrives on 03. Feb. in Elbing. They will then march towards Danzig for the II. Exp. army to wait. So for a long time we must transport troops from the south to the north. As many as dispensable. The Germans are perfectly surprised with this invasion. Indeed we could win with it the initiative, because most of the GER troops are on the way to the west.'

03. Feb. 1940, Elbing (East Prussia), I. Brit. Exp. Army
PL_03_02_40.jpg

'The Allies land in Elbing, East Prussia! It is the first invasion of this war. The ENG want to carry so POL with troops assistance. Further troops follow. Taken Elbing without resistance. The German inhabitants looked completely surprised.' - Washington Post

'To the Polish supreme command: Troops landed. Move us towards Danzig. Expect situation information and further instructions. Announce larger German troop movements. Expect soon larger resistance.' - FM Ironside, I. Brit. Exp. Army.

Warsaw
'A very good message. Abruptly many German air raids ended. A probably surprising invasion for GER. Our secret service information is incomplete unfortunately, so that we can constitute only little the accurate troop formations and positions of the GER. Thus we ask ourselves, where the main bulk of the armed forces remained. ... Therefore the occupation of the Danzig fortress is an intelligent move. With reinforcement we will surely be able to unite the troops.' - Report of the HQ staff, Warsaw.

PL_03_02_40_WEST.jpg

The possibilities by the intervention of 1 or 2 English armies are large. However one should not underestimate the well equipped German troops. With defense with a relationship of 1:1, with attack 3:1 (POL/GER). With ours scarcely 60 Div. we cannot and 24 British Div. we cannot really get the initiative. In addition fast armored troops and better weapons are missing to us.

Note
Indeed a surprising action. Are strained as it ends. The German troops were sent to a large extent now to the west. The majority still surely is on the way, and the question is whether GER lets these troops return again to the east. An occupation of Denmark would be most meaningful for GER, because then the strait is closed (mines). A supply and a fleet movement are prevented thereby.
