I play the IGC as Poland, and the one thing that always irritates me is Poland's paucity of colonists. Although I'm loathe to do so, I usually have to convert to Protestantism just to get enough to convert the Crimea. Is there any way of changing the colonist file to give Poland one colonist a year?

Poland doesn't get any colonists cuz it historically didn't. U can change the colonists.csv file though to change that ...

If it's just for force conversion u may consider turning CR catholic, sommink a bit more likely for Poland, that also gives u a settler a year.

In my last game as P-L, I had loads of colonists. You just need to be patient and convert to counter-reformation catholic. Building a Shipyard if possible helps too. The only problem is that by that time there may not be anything really choice left. I had a very nice empire in N,.A. especially the South (I kept thinking what New Orleans would have been like if the Poles had gotten here first.) And some land in Brazil that the Portugese never took. It is hard but you can do t if you play the game right (and you can do it without altering game files)

Everything you say makes sense, and I've take the CR Catholic route, conquered Venice to get a shipyard and in the mid 17th century started getting my 2 settlers per year, but the simple truth is I'm a glutton for colonists. I usually strike east first and reach Siberia way before the Russians do, but i never have enough colonists availible to make a dent in that vast region. I admit that it's cheating, but right now I'm feeling very cheaty. Could anyone tell me how exactly to modify the colonist file? Thank you. BTW, everyone's prompt answers are really great. I appreciate it.

I know it can be hard. I am playing England right now and I have more colonist than I can handle - I love it!!! But you can still do very well. I had over thirty colonies/tp and most I eventually converted into full provinces. Good Luck!!

U could just replace the RUS tag with the POL one and voilà. Seeing u got Siberia first anyway.

It would be nice if colonial dynamism altered through the game depending on what was going on, but I doubt the engine could handle that. So we get "it is now 1550, Spain has been reduced to two provinces and no colonies, she has no standing army and has been bankrupt six times ... okay, her colonial dynamism now goes up to three." :D

Use notepad, I'm quite sure you have it :)
And, people, don't tell me that changing colonists.csv for Poland, when it get to Siberia first is cheating, Poland was colinizing, area already populated in EU, ie Ukraine.
And whole colonial dynamism sucks, that exmple here of Spain is excellent
