As my empire gets larger, the amount of pop-up messages displaying gets quite cumbersome - if I want to keep track of things. What are the "absolute minimum" message types that some of you experienced users choose to display so as to not hinder the flow of the game too greatly?

aak,

you can customize messages, so only those that are important to you will show up.

Bib, I tend to reserve the "pop and pause" for very few things, because I automatically hit the pause key most of the time, with dire consequences!:D

Thanks, I'm aware of the fact that you can customize them - but was curious as to which messages people considered the "minimum necessary pop-up messages" - for lack of a better term. I suppose it depends on what you're current strategy is - but it seems like some messages are always critical - others are optional.

Monopolies, losing merchants, getting leaders, starting/ending sieges, alliances, starting/ending battles, arrival of armies/navies, monarchs, manufactories etc etc. Can't remember it all, but there is a lot of info you need to know.

But how know the gamemotor what is important for you?

Adler

I know you dont have the game yet Adler when you do there is a "Menu" on the game screen.
Go there and then to Option/Message settings
Every message in the game (quite a few) can then be set to how you want it to appear. Its one of the best features in the game....

What's important, and what is not...

That's up to you.

I'm the reverse of BiB, if I understand his post. I have "important" messages set to "pop up", but not pause. The only time the game pauses is if I hit the pause key - it gives me some consistency I can rely on.

I can tell you the 1st pop up message box i switched off, the one that pops up all the time to tell me Pirates have just appeared somewhere, what a waste of time that one is.

I have winning seiges on, otherwise i dont notice my army has succeeded and is now doing nothing.

Another important one is winning/loosing Naval battles, stops you forgetting about those ships that are no longer moving. I wish ships would continue on their path after they have won a battle.

But really its upto how you play the game, i'm like BiB I play at high speed, pause at every pop up message, input orders and then start the game running again.

Those tend to not be rampaging aka attacking u ;)

Other than occasionally introducing you to the wonders of home province attrition, no!:D

On the other hand, it is perhaps possible to miss the fact that such troops are hostile out of sheer familiarity at the sight. Not that I've ever done that!:D

I must admit, I don't believe I use pop-up messages for battles and sieges.......ones' ears and the scrolling messages at the bottom are usually sufficient for me.

Yes - I have come to rely more and more on the scrolling messages and have turned a lot of Popups off.

Good for you Uglyduck-after a while all the pop-ups get a little distracting!

I might rely on them a little more myself if there wasn't a nasty little bug that causes the game to crash to the desktop when I reach the top of the message buffer by pushing on the up arrow. As it is I do the popup & pause routine for everything but the 'pirate fleet appears', the 'xxx discovers yyy', & 'xxx wins a battle against yyy'. I've found this to be particularly useful for fleet & merchant handling.
