Ship jitter at ports or other tight worldmap spaces at 4x speed

At 4x speed on the world map my ships sometimes get hung up on the port bouncing in and out rapidly and repeatedly. It may be more than just a graphical glitch because it can last a fair while. Turning down the speed allows entry.

I have the same happen to me once in a while but I thought it's a problem related to prolonged alt+tabbing. It fixes itself eventually when AI or Player gives such a fleet a new movement order.

I do not think that is it as I normally do not use alt-tab. I've also had a mid-sized fleet icon get stuck in the North Sea leaving port between London and Copenhagen flipping direction 2-3 times a second and not getting anywhere until I changed the game speed down to two. It seems to happen off screen as well because if you look at the minimap a fleet en route to wherever will stay at one port for longer than usual.

Anyway "fixes itself anyway eventually" does not mean it is not a bug At 4x speed how many wasted months go by if it lasts 10-20 second? Certainly quite a few days.

Does this game take any measures to adapt to a wide screen monitor? My desktop is 1680x1050, what resolution does the game run at?

guess I shouldn't edit posts and just double, triple post blithely as apparently nobody notices edits.

Is there any way to change the game resolution and or play in a window at the native res? I'd like to see if this problem is caused by stretching the sprites.

It's even better to start a new thread with the new problem than add stuff to a thread about something completely different. :)

I do not see that this is a different problem but rather as a possible cause.
The problem is that ship icons get hung up in tight places on the world map at 4x speed.

If the pixel aspect is set to 1.33:1 for the traditional crt monitor (800x600, 1024x768, etc) and they are getting stretched into 1.6:1 on my 1680x1050 display then it may be causing problems with the collision detection routines which can be less noticable at lower speeds.

I could be completely wrong, have you a better idea why this happens to me? It is completely annoying.

If I could play at the native resolution, say in a window, I might be able to avoid the issue altogether. Why do I have to play it full screen? Guess I'll have to go searching through the various config files and see if there is anything undocumented that might help me.

I am not happy.

I have that problem with 1280x1024.

Not very often you said, I get it quite frequently.

Anyway I hope to hear from a developer about this, but maybe I won't.

I'm really thinking that 4x speed takes some shortcuts something along the lines of 8 directions of movement instead of, say -- 16, and that this is why ships have trouble clearing obstacles at that speed.

Purest speculation though, but in the absence of a definitive answer that is all I have.

Maybe you have a savegame at hand that shows the problem? It would probably make it much easier to show devs than tell them.

I had a problem with a stuck guy for many years a while back but have no save anymore. Reloading didn't fix as far as I remember.

If I run across it I'll give it a try saving. Right now I have other fish to fry. I figured out how to run the game in a window at 1024X768 so I'll see if the problem comes back. Unfortunately I lost a few hours and about a year of game time because the autosave autosaved before loading the autosave game.

Well playing in a window was a bust. I kept losing my right mouse button during sea battles. I might try again sometime when I have fewer battles to fight. I have a base of operations in Natal and have three countries at war with me. I barely have time to go in for repairs before the next battle starts.

I have a savegame I could upload somewhere that was afflicted with this problem (one fleet bouncing on London but It seems to me that games are paused when you load them and cannot immediately go to 4x speed so it may not appear.
