BUGSVILLE - Portuguese Leaders

I would say 80% of the leader's names for Portugal are mispelled or incorrect and I offer myself to correct it if you want.

I can directly edit the leaders.por file if you want, by changing only names or changing dates too (small changes in order not to influence the game balance).

Read all about it here http://www.europa-universalis.com/forum/showthread.php?p=4410498#post4410498 and please tell me what you think.

I think nothing, for I know only a scattering of Portuguese history and the individuals even less, I'm sorry to admit. Although I did live in the Portuguese area of Sydney for some years and liked it very much :)

What I need here is a bit of robust discussion amongst those who do know, and some agreed conclusions to be posted here; seems to me there's still a little way to go along those lines. Then I'd be happy to take your offer of a pre-edited file.

OK. As the americans say: "You got yourself a deal" :D. I'll try that other portuguese people give their oppinion and idontlikeforms (an expert in portuguese things of the game) to be more precise in his oppinion. And of course others.

I'll promise you a file when/if consensus arrive.

Hellow Andrew,

As I promised you here is the reviewed file leaders.por made with a more than robust discussion as you can see here.

Many thanks to all colaborators specially to idontlikeforms and Albuquerque.

Note regarding the file: The 3 new leaders were just added in sequence. Please check if OK.

Please let me know if you need something more.

I think it would be helpful if you could get other Portuguese speakers to comment on this.

1 - Who are you?

2 - Did you read the discussion?

3 - I'm Portuguese, SirDaniel is Portuguese, idontlikeforms is an expert in Portuguese history, Albuquerque knows a lot about it.

4 - Why do you think we need more validations?

5 - AndrewT, do you agree with him?

6 - I have nothing against other portuguese speakers looking at this, just point me some, I think it's a waste of more time though.

You can't use Leader ID 09640 , it's in use in the Venice file. You'll have to find another one.

Have you checked if any of these new or changed IDs are called out in any event files? A text search of the DB dir and subdirs will help with both these.

Also I see Xavier has had a major stats upgrade, from 6/1/1 to 5/5/5. I assume this is deliberate, and agreed?

I think a leader should be 3/3/1/3 in my ElioGC scenario,
the trouble is that Portugal gets only explorers in a certain period
so I'll raise stats for explorers to 3/3/3 at least (agreed or not ...) :D
Ricardo, go strong on with such research: I suddenly downloaded those lines for my scenario. ;)

You accepted my offer of a pre-edited file. I was assuming you would take care of the technical easier (for you) stuff. I don't know how to do those text searches, can't you just final-edit these numbers to free ones?

Xavier changed stats with Caramuru (formerly Camoens) and yes, it was agreed as you can confirm in the discussion.

You didn't help me one bit when I needed suggestions, all you wanted was help for your mod and I helped you without receiving even a small thanks in return. So, my "friend" ,the suggestions are over, and I'm not going to change one comma in this file.

"Pre-edited" does not mean "unchecked". But if you can't find it within yourself to finish the job, then I'll do it for you, when I can find the time.

A text search in Windows is trivial. Just right-click the DB dir in Windows Explorer and choose Search, enter the leader ID number in the "a word or phrase in the file" field, and go. That's all I did, it took me less than a minute.

You just completed my education on Windows, Cheers :D.

Unfortunatelly something must be wrong with my Windows or with something: I did the search for the 3 new leaders and nothing was detected! Then I opened the leaders.ven file and I confirm what you said: 09640 already exists, it's the very first one, "admiral P.Loredan".

So... as much as would like to do it, I can't, don't know why! I suggest you search the gap in the ID's 09630 to 09634 and replace that 09640. As you said, it's less than a minute.

Note: I don't understand that remark "# Ids free to 09629"! :confused:

Just to proof I'm not fooling you....

Man, this is weird...

Presumably left over from when the file was first written. Clearly it has been expanded since and that remark not updated appropriately.

Hard to say anything about Portuguese leaders, I'm italian!
The mod, like You define it, takes a lot of time and continuous tests in SP.
People take it on and play it, no written thx to me except in my yearly MP game.

It's a pleasure teaching sth to someone, if a Man knows ... then anyone modifies such learned notions to own necessities.
Sad to read such words by You: isn't a signal of trust and esteem reading Your posts and downloading them? Thx very much anyway.

I support the initiative of correcting the spelling of Portuguese names according to modern Portuguese. By the way, in modern Brazilian Portuguese we write Antônio and not António and Pero da Covilha instead of Pêro da Covilhã. Is it different in Portugal? Antônio Prior do Crato should loose the D. as Dom is only a pronoun and not even Afonso V is getting it.

Switching leaders is a different subject. Let’s see one by one:

Replacing Avranches by Henrique – I am against. All that I know about the first one (which is not much) is that he was called Álvaro Vaz de Almada (later Count de Avranches in the English Normandy), was a well known knight who accompanied the Infante Pedro in his European tour where they fought the Hussites among other things. Upon their return, Almada was made Alferes (defender) of Lisbon and successfully commanded Infante Pedro’s supporters in the regency conflict against Queen Leonor. He also successfully supported Infante Pedro in the conflict against the Count de Barcellos. He died together with the Infante Pedro in the Battle of Alfarrobeira in 1449 against Afonso V’s much superior forces, just after shouting “É fartar, vilanagem” (feast yourselves, villains) for which he is remembered.
I agree that is not much for a general, but on the other hand, Infante Henrique’s military career was marked by his fiasco commanding the first attempt to conquer Tangiers, where his brother (the Infante Santo) was made hostage in exchange of the liberation of Ceuta which never occurred. He took part of the later successful conquest of Tangiers and may have taken part of Alfarrobeira Battle in the king’s side. But Afonso V was present in both campaigns and he is already a leader. I see no better name than Álvaro Vaz de Almada.

Replacing Diogo de Silves by Gonçalo Velho Cabral - I am in favour

Replacing Camões by Ravasco – The poet was born after this Camões had retired, so I have no idea who he is meant to represent.

Changing Correos name to Caramuru and switching his status with S. Francisco Xavier – I am against. First, despite Correos dates being possibly bored from Diogo Álvares Correia (the Caramuru), he is probably representing Antonio Correia who made a voyage to Pegu in 1519 and conquered Bahrain in 1521. Caramuru is only a well known shipwrecked survivor who married a chieftain’s daughter and helped the Portuguese when they tried to settle in Bahia. Correos status reflects a real conquistador, and that can only be Antonio Correia.
Second, S. Francisco Xavier was a missionary and as far as I know he didn’t fought battles, he only encouraged the Portuguese to fight. When he encouraged the Portuguese Armada to leave Malaca and face a much superior Naval Force (in the Rio de Perlis Battle) he stayed in Malaca, and thus had no influence in the outcome. His 6-1-1 status correctly reflects his exclusive land explorer and colony builder leadership.

Changing De Queros to João da Nova and Antonio Fernandes to Queirós – Apparently De Queros was standing for Pedro Fernandes Queirós (de Quieros in Spanish) who discovered the Hebrides for Spain in the time life of Antonio Fernandes a leader of whom we now nothing about. So, changing Antonio Fernandes name to Pedro Fernandes Queirós seems fine, and João da Nova is a good name for an admiral and explorer, but João da Nova pre dates this guy. He died in 1509, while this guy is activated in 1515. So, his dates also need a little change.

Changing Trant to Bernardim Freire de Andrade – I am against. I am not against having B. Freire de Andrade as a new leader, but he died in March 1809 and thus doesn’t fit to replace Trant. Besides, unlike B. Freire de Andrade, Trant took part in the Battle of Vimeiro decisive to expel the French occupation forces. In fact, the good thing about Trant is that he was present during the entire campaign and is not a leader elsewhere. Besides, he represents the English forces, fundamental in this war. Ideally, Wellington and Beresford should have this role :rolleyes: , but that won’t happen. A little about these guys here:link

Replacing Álvaro de Menezes by André Furtado de Mendonça – I don’t know much about Álvaro de Menezes, but Furtado de Mendonça failed in his major naval battle (Bantam -1601). He should rather be a land leader. I say keep the one already used.

Replacing the 1st Álvares Botelho by Rui Freire de Andrade – Nothing against Rui Freire de Andrade but this is the correct Nuno Álvares Botelho (correct dates) he shouldn’t be replaced.

The 2nd Álvares Botelho – This is the wrong one which should be replaced. Rui Freire de Andrade is an option but the dates would need to be fixed.

Additional Leaders: no problem with Antonio de Saldanha, but Nuno da Cunha and Constantino Sá should only be generals in case they fought in Europe or Northern Africa. Antônio Raposo Tavares who in the mid XVII’s conquered (I mean destroyed), the Guairá missions (modern Paraná State) thus expanding the Portuguese area of influence in Brazil, and explored western and northern Brazil shouldn’t be forgotten.

Olá Xang,

Too bad you didn't appear 2 or 3 weeks ago, a brazilian contribution to the discussion would have been precious.

About the names: I'm aware Brazilian Portuguese have some differences but the Portuguese from Portugal should prevail. And yes, it's António not Antônio in Portugal.

About the "D." - as you know it was used by kings, nobles and some clerical figures. All our Kings and Princes used the "Dom" and the game don't use it maybe for reasons of consistency with other nations (for example Spannish kings historically didn't use the "Dom"). We thought leader names should not necessarily follow the same rule as the monarchs. But I see your point.

About the leaders you agree and don't agree. There was a lot of discussion about these leaders as you can see and I recommend you read the thread, I had to set a "dead-line" for the discussions as it was taking too much time. The file is the result. Many of the problems you refer, dates for example, we were aware of them and most of the times we didn't find the optimum solution, we found the possible solution given the constraints. For example: we agreed not to change dates and stats in order not to influence gameplay.

However you are presenting some valuable points, Francisco Xavier stats and Álvaro Botelho, for example.

I suggest the following: If after you read the discussion you still feel the file could be improved, why don't you open a new discussion and coordinate the process? I'll be happy to participate.

Hello AndrewT,

After further discussion, the Portuguese community and affiliates have agreed with a new file for leaders.por. We’re not only fixing the spelling, we are also replacing some names and adjusting their dates and stats when necessary. For more details check the discussion http://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum/showthread.php?t=211137&page=5&pp=25 , or simply post your doubts here if you prefer.

Changes done in the Vanilla's leader file:
-> G. Velho Cabral is replacing Diogo de Silves.
-> Pedro, Duke de Coimbra is replacing Avranches.
-> Covilhã had his stats downgraded, previously 6-3-3, now 6-2-2;
-> Azambuja is replacing Camões. We kept Camões dates for Azambuja as they are not wrong and making Azambuja appear earlier could unbalance a little. However, we decreased his manouver from six to four as this is enough to help colonization and his accomplishments can’t be compared to Almeida’s. His fire and shock were upgraded from 1-1 to 2-2.
-> Albuquerque gained siege value of 2. Previously 5-5-5-0, now 5-5-5-2.
-> We upgraded Francisco de Almeida’s rank from 6 to 1. He also lost 1 siege value to compensate for Albuquerque's gain. Previously 6-4-5-2 rank 6, now 6-4-5-1 rank 1.
-> We changed the dates and stats of leader 09615 (previously Miguel C Real, now João da Nova) so that they correctly represent the new leader (previously 1500-03 and 5-3-3, now 1501-09 and 5-4-3).
-> We changed the dates and stats of leader 09617 (previously De Queros now Jorge Álvares) so that they correctly represent the new leader(previously 1515-30 and 4-3-3, now 1509-21 and 5-1-1). With his earlier dates he will need manouver 5 to reach China. As he (AFAIK) was no soldier, he is getting lower fire and shock.
-> Martim Afonso de Sousa’s had his rank upgraded from 9 to 2 as he was governor in the East and in the West and commanded important battles.
-> Queirós is replacing Antonio Fernandes.
-> B. F. de Andrade is replacing Trant (dates were 1808-10 and now are 1807-09). He had his rank ahistorically decreased from 0 to 1 so that he won’t eclipse Wellington just like in real life. For similar reasons the same was done with G. F. de Andrade.
-> Changed the dates and stats of leader 09636 (previously the second Álvares Botelho, now R. Freire de Andrade) to correctly fit the new leader (previously rank 1, 1655-80 and 4-3-2, now rank 2, 1612-33 and 4-2-3).

It's our opinion that the portuguese leader file is far from reflecting the Portuguese anchievements. In order to slightly improve this condition, without severely damaging the ballance we propose the following additions:

historicalleader = {
id = { type = 6 id = 096000 }
name = "Nuno da Cunha"
category = conquistador
rank = 2
fire = 2
shock = 3
movement = 4
siege = 1
startdate = { year = 1529 month = december day = 0 }
deathdate = { year = 1539 month = february day = 30 }
remark = "Governor of India."
}

historicalleader = {
id = { type = 6 id = 096001 }
name = "Matias de Albuquerque"
category = general
rank = 1
fire = 3
shock = 3
movement = 3
startdate = { year = 1639 }
deathdate = { year = 1644 }
remark = "Fought the Spanish in the Portuguese independence war."
}

historicalleader = {
id = { type = 6 id = 096002 }
name = "António Raposo Tavares"
category = conquistador
rank = 6
fire = 2
shock = 2
movement = 4
siege = 0
startdate = { year = 1628 }
deathdate = { year = 1651 }
remark = "Conquered most of the Guairá missions and explored Western Brazil."
}

You can find more information about these leaders in the same link posted above. Edit: Here is the Linkcheck post 117

OK, here is the proposed new file. I'd appreciate it if some people could test it, say start once as POR in each scenario and check there are no errors on load or a bit of play. Thanks.
