I was playing Denmark in the Grand Campaign, and tried a new strategy towards Sweden: bribes - and lots of them. The goal was of course to annex them.
But when I eventually had a 200+ relationship and a military alliance with them there was no annex option even though they had been my vassal for more than 10 years. I thought that it might be because I had no royal marriage with them, but for some reasons royal marriages cannot be arranged with vassals (why?). I tried ended the vassal relationship, but I nothing happened even though the option was highlighted. Surely that must be a bug?
At the time we were at war with the unfortunate Hannoverians. Might that be the reason?

Regards,

Emperor

Uhm... nice province. I
think I'll take it.

I'm no expert on this (Just started playing), but I remember reading here in the forum that you can't annex great powers. Now if Sweden is set as a minor power, then I don't know. As I said, I'm new here. ;)

Sweden is NOT a major power by default in the German version! The reason MUST be something else!

I noticed that I couldn't vassalize an ally (didn't get the option) while our alliance was at war. Yes, this _might_ as well be the same with annexations - though I haven't tried that yet.
(Maybe because the AI of the minor to be vassalized/annexed compares the military strength of the two powers in question, and in war this fluctuates too much? Might be...)

I don't think you can annex a vassal while you're both at war. Try end the war with Hannover and then see if you can restore the realm of Margrethe I ;)

The war with Hannover ended alright - the Swedes stormed the two provinces, and I moved in an annexed the whole enchilada. Allies are a nice thing :)

After the war I was finally able to end the vassal relationship, and then I finally got the option to offer a royal marriage. So I guess I have to do it all over again: royal marriage, bribes, military alliance, lots of bribes, vassalization, 10 years wait, more bribes and then finally - maybe - I can annex them. Makes me wonder whether I shouldn't simply smash them with the help of Russia?

E.

From what I read on the forums, you can only annex vassals that have a common border. Unless France has a border with Hungary, it will never be annexed.

I also believe that it was mentioned that the vassalization/annexation AI had been modified in recent patches. Perhaps Sweden is strong enough that it will not accept annexation at this time.

Marechal,
Sure <G> problem is I dont have the game yet :D
