I hadn't played in quite a while and didn't realize how absolutely insane plagues are with the default settings. I'm getting a new plague every 3 months, and my capital has been secluded basically the entire game. My family members drop like flies.

The game is basically unplayable with the default plague settings. I'd like to avoid having to restart the game, is there some way to change the plague frequency for a game that's already started?

No, the game rules are locked in when you start the game. I suppose someone might come along with advice on how to edit the save file.

Honestly this "feature" is just completely broken.

I ended up having to abandon that game because every single province in Britain had plagues on it. I restarted a new game and turned all the plague options down to minimum (but not off). 40 years in and yet again, every single province has multiple on going plagues that have wiped out pretty much every noble family.

And this is on minimum settings. This is just completely insane.

Just play with the plagues turned off in the Game Rules. They're too much of a pain in the butt...

Agreed 100%. I finally shut it off because I was getting wiped out by plagues and diseases about every 15 minutes of gametime. It's completely broken.

The game rules can't be changed mid-game indeed, but the mods CAN be added, and they don't block achievements now.

The plagues' spawn and spread chances aren't hardcoded, they are in the open game files, so they can be modded – you can lower the chances or even set some of them to zero.

They indeed went overboard with frequency IMO: plague spawn chances increase with higher development, in coastal areas, in baronies with ports, cities, city guilds, in counties with traditions like Maritime Mercantilism or Seafarers etc. So, if you play in England (especially around London), Corduba, Italy, Sicily – get prepared for plague spam. Honestly, in my Sicily playthrough I often reloaded when I got a new one, because I don't want to sit in seclusion for two years again, and there isn't anything interesting about it gameplay-wise.

My big thing with plagues is that they get way too big way too often. Most plagues should be VERY localized (traveling a couple of provinces max). I wouldn't even mind more of them if they just didn't spread nearly as much as they do.

But the game will have half a dozen plagues that cover a quarter of Europe like every year, and it's kind of crazy.
