Privateers

What's a privateer, exactly? (I know what it was historically, but in the game?)

Are they explorers who at the same time are competent admirals? Or do they have special abilities?

In the CG, nothing AFAIK.

In the original BG, they could lead privateer fleets ("hired" pirates).

I found a site with a list of the french (and english) kings, generals, andmirals...and privateers. I already got at least one of the leaders included in the "privateers" list in my current game, and I used him as an explorer. Hence my question.
