Yesterday I tried starting up a copy of the game for the first time in quite a long while, butI got a message stating something like: "You need to install the latest milestone".

I've got no idea what this means. I was definitely able to start up the same copy in the past without any problems. I think the version is 1.07, but I'm not exactly sure.

Can anyone help?

Before installing a new AOD once make sure fragments of the old are removed. You can use CCleaner a free software and do defragmentation of you system.
I have seen that message("You need to install the latest milestone") to in one of the older hoi2 versions. I would have made a new installation that are not in the C: but in a different location or hard-drive and I recommend using the 1.8 patch.
