I ran into the following ironic problem in my game recently. My ruler, an independent Duke, was in the middle of a war against another independent Duke. My Duke had no children and his heir was his cousin -- who happened to be a Count vassal to the opposing Duke. In fact, this Count was the commander of the leading enemy army group during the war.

Well, my Duke got sick, his condition worsened into pneumonia, and quickly he died. So the Count became my new Duke but he was still commanding the enemy armies fighting against his own Duchy. And the war went on and on; it took ages to stop it even though neither Duke had a claim against the other.

This was IMHO a rather perverse and paradoxical situation. I'm just wondering if, in game, there is a way either to prevent this from happening at all, or stop it once it starts.

I agree with the mod, while I cannot imagine who would command the 'enemy' troops, the only way, though unlikely to happen (as you seemed to have indicated), would have been to have heirs of your own. On a rather facetious note, I must say that such a situation strikes me as humorous in it's (for lack of a better word within my vocabulary) oddity.
