Hello,
I have a problem with EU2. I just bought the game, and have run into two errors, and a possible bug/patch tweak. I have read the "Running Problems - Please read before posting" message and have followed the instructions twice (to make sure I did it correctly).

Problems as encountered:
1. While playing before installing the 1.05 patch, the game would crash on the surrender screen with the victory points standings. This would require me to restart my machine. I could then not get EU2 to start at all. This happened before following the instructions and installing the patches.
2. After installing the 1.05 (and even trying the 1.04), the game will work once or twice all the way through (starting the game, playing an hour or so, saving, quiting), after which will run into a "video mode not supported" or "video cannot be loaded" problem when trying to run the program the third time. This occurs immediately on startup of EU2. After this error, EU2 will not load at all, giving the generic Windows crash message for the program. After EU2 crashes completely, I am given the Windows "Blue Screen of Death" and I am forced to restart my machine. I have followed all the instructions for uninstalling and reinstalling twice now, and have always received the same problem.
3. (possible bug, or patch tweak?) After installing 1.05, I have noticed that some of the shields change (noticebly Ottomans, from a green flag to a red one, and the Golden Horde, from a black flag to a white with some kind of red crescent moon design). I did not find this in the tweak list for 1.05, so I'm not sure what this means.

Here are my system specs:
US - EU2 1.05
Windows 98SE
Athlon 750
384 PC100 RAM
1.2 GB free space
3d Prophet II MX Dual Display
Sound Blaster Live!
TEAC 24X CD-ROM
"Mention that you read this thread before posting" - Yep

#1. this is a known bug, unfortunately it is still not fixed though the problem should be less frequent in 1.05 than in 1.03 or 1.04. It is caused by a DirectX problem.
#2. Related to #1 imho. DirectX is not shutdown properly when you quit the game so you need to restart the computer before playing again. Sorry :(
#3. This is flag modification made by a user (Mad King James). The version included in 1.05 is an old one and if you want to get the latest one, check here.

viper37, one more related thing in your response to #2. Even when restarting the machine EU2 will not work after I receive the video problem.

Do you know if this will be fixed in an upcoming patch?

Is there anything I can do in the meantime to get the game to play? I'm a big fan of EU1 (couldn't tell you how many complete games I've played over the last year), and EU2 just has so much more stuff that I want to sort and play through...

sorry, I thouhgt it worked when restarting the comp. :(
I do not know if Johan will be able to fix it. So far he hasn't been able to reproduce it and is going blind with this :(

Ok, we'll try something that can alleviate the problem and hopefully, the game will start ok.
Try this first:
http://www.directxbuster.de/index_e.html

this will remove DirectX. Download both DirectX 8.0a and 8.1

Once DX is removed with the utility, apply DX 8.0a. If it works fine and it is not causing problems, stay with it. If you have any problems with any games or with EU2, upgrade to 8.1.

If you still have problems:
http://www.guru3d.com/detonator-destroyer/

this will remove your Nvidia drivers. Download (before removing the current ones) and install the latest drivers that you'll find on Nvidia's site.

Usually, things work quite fine after that.

Good news. I've done both (blasting DX and Nvidia drivers and reinstalling), and it works now as long as I save and exit after a couple of hours. Also, now when it crashes, restarting works in terms of getting into the game.

Thanks for all of your help. Here's looking forward to 1.06 haha...

hopefully, Johan will figure out how to repair this problem :)
