Hello everxbody!
I know this problem has been described before, but I still need help.
When running IGC under Windows XP I can't start the patch.exe. I have read that it is a problem with the latest version of Java Virtual Machine. So I downloaded the old version, but it seems I can't install it. Whenever I try to, I receive an error message at the end of the install process. Any hints?

I guess I'd better try to install it at home then.. but maybe I can try to give a hint without testing..

What error message do you get when installing Ms-JVM?

Have you tried running the installer in a compability mode (not sure if it can help, but might be worth a shot?)

There is no particular error message. Only a window with the error X on red ground, the typical error sound and an "OK" to press. After pressing OK I receive a message the installation was complete - but not so. When i try to run the patch.exe nothing's changed. Thanks for any advice.

Oh, I forgot: I have no idea what a compatibility mode is....

Right-click on the program, select 'Properties'(furthest down) then select 'Compability' tab (far right one) and check the box for 'Compability mode' (first square) and select something old, like Windows 95. Then press Ok :)

That's why I like forums:You always learn something new. Tried the compability modus - but to no avail. When I now run the VM installation the only difference is an additional error message: Error loading W95Inf.dll. :-(
I appreciate your efforts, Nikolai. Any further suggestions?

Sorry - can't help, I just tried an install and it worked nicely.

I can only ask that you make sure that your install file is about 5.2 Megs big, the first one I downloaded was about 4kb and only produced an error claiming "windows no longer supports this" when 'installing'.

I also note that there are a few other versions with different sizes, but I don't know what is different with them.

And to elíminate all possible problems - you do have administrator rights in XP, right? (So that you are allowed to install stuff at all).

( I downloaded my JVM from ftp://ftp.3angels.ru/pub/windows/msjava/msjavx86.exe , you might want to try that one?)

edit: Also - since Win95 Compability mode fails to work, maybe your WinXP install has been damaged in some way? (a few files damaged/lost/deleted?) Maybe you should try a reinstall/repair? (Try using compability mode on some other, possibly also old, programs first though)
