Ok so I have been playing this game for a long while now with v1.05 and it was running fine. I was running win95 and when i upgraded to WinME now i can't download the savefiles from my friend when he hosts. He always hosted because his computer is faster. Nothing at all changed except for upgrading to winME. The problem is that i join the game, get in, and normally you'll see the number counting beside your name because i'm downloading the saved file from him. Now suddenly it goes to 0 and just stays there, proceeding not to download the file. We tried clearing the names in the save file, downloading the file outside the game (which still didn't work). We can start a new game without any problems, but if we have to save and resume later, now suddenly i can no longer receive the saved file. This is really frustrating considering how it worked fine before, upgraded, now it's having this problem. Is there any solution to this?

When you tried copying the files outside the game into the scenario/save directory, what happened? Did the game fail to load?

What happened if you try to continue the save file in single-player mode? What if you start a new single-player game, save, then try to continue that at a different time, does that work?

As he said try transfering the files outside of the game (instant messenger or email). Reinstalling your game is always a good thing to do if you can't think of a solution.

He didn't say what the behaviour is if he transferred the files outside the game (ie. via ICQ or something similar). How does it fail then? Obviously it won't fail in the same way since there is no downloading to be done. Does it just not start at all? Does it crash? Does it do the same thing when loaded in single player? Basically I am trying to determine if the save file is corrupted in download, or is it a problem with MP. If it is a problem with MP, why doesn't it occur when the game first starts?

This is very important to diagnosing what the problem is, simply reinstalling could fix the problem, but is unlikely to, and is somewhat time consuming before trying to figure out the source of the problem first.

Reinstalling after upgrading to ME might be a good idea. Getting off of ME altogether is a better idea, since it is a horrible OS. '98, 2000 or XP are much better if you have to use a Microsoft OS.

Ok, we tried sending via ftp but when we do we get a CTD (similiar to the chat bug).

Could someone please point out:

1) Exactly which files need to be copied from my machine.

2) Exactly where he needs to put them on his machine.

3) Any edits I need to do to the files before sending them to him.

That would be great :)

Also, he did a clean re-install of EU2 v1.05 after upgrading. That was our first idea.

We can start a new game, we can play without issue. But if we try to restore from a save, he can't download. It's weird.

Generally transfering a file with some other mechanism (such as ftp) is better than using the in-game download mechanism. It is both much faster (particularly with several players) and seems to be more reliable.

Usually I would compress it first, to make it faster, but remember to uncompress :)

The file in question is the <save game name>.eug file (you don't need the other file with a similar name). You take it from the host's .../scanarios/save directory and put it in the same place on the other players drives without any modification, then you should be good to go.

The file is pure (human readable) text, anything else would certainly be a sign of corruption.

Has he tried playing single-player from a save file? Or from the same multi-player file? Those would be the next things to check if the file transfer doesn't work.

Problems With Multiplayer!

Well I did as you suggested and viewed the file. It was all perfectly readable so I also did what was suggested and tried it in single player. I was able to play the game in single player without any problems whatsoever. This tells me that the file is not corrupt. As duuk said i did a clean reinstall, and all sorts of stuff. I'll say again, it worked 100% until i installed ME then it suddenly stopped working. That tells me that there is something in windows ME that doesn't agree with the networking code of this game. I'm also not behind a firewall or proxy server. Either way this is really annoying.

Have you or the host upgraded to DirectX 9.0?
