I installed Gold. It worked.

Then I downloaded the patch and ran it.

I get this error for Rome.exe

DeleteFile failed; code 5.
Access is denied

So I delete it manually and then try again but get MoveFile failed instead of DeleteFile failed.

You are trying to apply the patch while the game Launcher is still open. That's why the text in it says to close the Launcher before applying the patch; Windows can't overwrite a file that's in use.

I did that once. But I still got the same result after closing the launcher and trying again (and also after deleting the patch, rebooting and repeating the whole process with the launcher closed after download).

Edit: Also I uninstalled, reinstalled and tried to patch with the same result.

Its not on the default path, if thats what you mean.

and explicitly running as admisitrator gives the same error message

I also get a "Rome stopped unexpectly, windows is searching for a solution" error when leaving the game normally (and have done even before I first tried patching).

I can only guess that either your install source files are corrupt, or you have an anti-virus app that is getting in the way. The message is a Windows error indicating that Windows itself is unable to get write access to the file.

I tried downloading via the launcher again, with the same result. However I then downloaded it from the forum, and that patch did work. I can't see any obvious difference between the files.

I can't find anything in my av (Kaspersky) report files to say it was doing the blocking, and I checked it had the same settings on it as patches that I previously used on other PI games. (It ought to report and ask for confirmation rather than block with no notification if it spots something funny)

Anyway, its patched now.
