Except it's not that simple. I edited using Notepad++, and tried using Windows Explorer, and when I dragged my gamestate file back into the zip file, it compressed it in a strange way, so now the zip file is only 1043 KB instead of its original size, 1197 KB. Opening it in the game shows it to be corrupt and unplayable. I'm using Windows 10, don't know if that matters.
Except it IS that simple. I've done this over a dozen times on Windows 7 but also around three times on Windows 10 after updating earlier this Friday. Did you somehow mess up the save file edit in anyway? And what about your Notepad++ save settings? Was the gamestate file the same size after saving prior to the compression?

Gamestate file exactly the same size after editing on Notepad++, around 15 MB. Not sure what Notepad++ settings I need to mess with, all end-lines are still LF, not CRLF.

Anyway, it worked when I finally followed the instructions on the wiki, using 7zip and making sure I used the parameter tc=off. Strange though, the .sav file was still only 1043 KB. Guess the file size was a red herring.

Glad it worked for you out of the box, but just no need to call the wiki instructions "junk and totally unnecessary," since that's the only thing that works for some people.

I've done it using the Windows Explorer (Windows7) method and it didn't work.

I've done it using the winRAR method and it does.

I'm not sure what settings are different in Windows7 or if/how you can modify them.
