The installation never really starts.

I earlier found a solution on this pages but cannot find it this time.
Well, I downloaded Patch 1.06 but I had so many problems running the game that I uninstalled EU2. Then I remembered that I had used a special method to install it the first time, but I could not find that sticky. Anyway, the installation stops in the middle of everything, and I believe the solution was to download parts of the CD to the hard disk.

I am using EU2 Scandinavian Version (Paradox - Vision Park)

I am running Win98

Gateway
GenuineIntel Pentium(r) II Processor Intel MMX(TM) Technology
128MB RAM

1.17 Gb free on my HDD

Video: 3dfx Voodoo 3

Sound: Sound Blaster PCI64 Direct Sound Blaster

DirectX v8.1 (4.08.01.0810)

I think that’s everything you asked for in the sticky

Please indicate which sticky I should use or I can (re-)install this wonderful game.

BR,
Bonde

The thread you're looking for has actually been merged with several others but the information is now in the forum FAQ. Have a look at this post and you'll find Patric's fix if you scroll down a little way. Let me know if that doesn't work.

Then I installed the 1.06 patch...

An started a new grand campaign with Sweden. I cancel vassalisation in august 1419 and the scenarios CTDs...I had in fact less problems with the 1.05 patch...it would run about 100 years before a crash occured.

I am using a Scandinavian version of the game. I have renamed avi to avi_old. I have tried the game three times and have had random CTDs within the three first years. Anybody who can help me?

Best regards,
Bonde

Very strange.

Have you checked with both your audio and video card manufacturers to confirm that you have installed the latest drivers? Some of them are very buggy and will cause occasional crashes if not up to date.

Also, have you run a Windows Update recently? Did you also install some of the recommended updates as well as the critical ones? There have been some important graphics bug fixes that you might not have applied yet...

Failing that, I suspect it's less of a hardware issue and may be more of a bug forum problem Let me know on the above two items and then I'll move this over there if you're still having problems.

Still CTDs

I have now dowloaded the latest Video Card and Sound Card drivers. I have also updated Windows...with all the updates I could find. I tried a new Sweden scenarion and CTD when trying marry a girl in Savoy! :D

Best regards,
Bonde

It almost sounds as though something really weird has happened with the code of the program. I think the next thing I'd do is completely unintall EU2 again and then do a fresh 1.00 install from the CD followed by a direct patch to 1.06. With any luck that should get rid of whatever it is that's going awry...but if it doesn't then I'm mystified. It doesn't sound like a hardware conflict, though, since that ought to either refuse to load or crash almost immediately. I also don't recall reading any bug reports relating to CTDs due to RMs...

Anyway...try the complete reinstall, start a new game, and let me know whether it helps or not. If not, I'll see if I can borrow Patric or Johan for a moment to have a look at it.

Will try...

I will try to do as you say, and if that does not work I will get a new computer!!

FYI, I did not buy HoI because both EU and EUII contained so many bugs that you never could finish one game to the end.
But you are doing a great job at supporting your fans. :)

BR,
Bonde

Heh. Well, we try...:)

I must confess that I haven't had any trouble finishing a game and have had almost no CTDs since 1.04 (and I have yet to have an HoI CTD) so I'm afraid that there is probably something relating to your system that is conflicting with the software somehow. Maybe getting that new computer isn't such a bad idea... :p

Actually that's viper quoting Patric and is the same one that I included in the FAQ at the top of the forum. :)

Let me know how it turns out.

Works like a charm

It works very well. I have played 150 yrs with Sweden without a single CTD. Well, that is not true. In the menu before starting playing, it CTD after the introduction music stopped. I then put the music on zero, and after that no probs!

Thank you Mr. T for your help. :)

Best regards,
Bonde

That's very good news. Glad to be of service. :)

I regret to say I have probs.

I have played the first scenario for 251 years and all of a sudden in CTDs. It is during the glorious Nordic Wars and Denmark's possesions are threatened and the game CTDs. I am frustrated.

Please, Mr. T, help me!

Okay....

I'm going to need some more information:

Do you have a saved game file (either a manual save or autosave) from just before the crash? If so, are you able to load the save game okay (i.e. it doesn't crash on load, it crashes during play)?

Are you playing with a "pure" version of 1.06? By this I mean, are you running with the just current 1.06 patch installed, or have you added the 1.06b_beta files, the EEP, the AGP, or any other user mod?

Have you editted any of the files in any way? Have you made any minor adjustment (however minor) to the save game file at any time? Have you tweaked or adjusted any of the other files in the db folder (the leader, events, monarchs, etc.) for any nation?

Is there anything else "odd" that happens just before the CTD? Does your computer slow down, the mouse pointer become jumpy, the screen flicker, or anything else that might indicate a hardware error or driver error anywhere?

What exactly are you doing when it CTDs? Is it a case of it always crashing when you click on a certain button, or select a certain corps, or make a DP adjustment, or anything repeatable like that...or is it a case of it crashing when a certain date is reached?

What about the date that it crashes? Are you in exactly 1670? Does the crash always happen on a specific day? Does it always happen in a specific month during the year (i,e, it crashes on a different day but it's always in January)? Does it just crash sometime during the year but not necessarily during the same month?

Do you notice any event in the history log that occurs just before the crash? Does it crash when you are responding to a specific event?

Essentially anything you can tell me about the situation will help me diagnose the problem, but I suspect that it's a bug of some sort. Check in the bug reporting forum to see if it's one that has already been identified in the sticky of reported 1.06 bugs.

Let me know and we'll take it from there. :)

Help me Mr. T!

Yes, I have a saved file.

Yea, I am playing wity a "pure" file.

No adjustments made.

Sometimes the computer slows down...but not always.

I tried to move a navy in Bothnic Sea to Vastergotland in May 1700...so it is more than the 200 odd years I stated.

I did not notice any event.

I started a new GC...but now it starts to CTD early on as well.

BR,
Bonde

Have you renamed the avi folder to avi_old?

Also...please e-mail that save game to me and I'll have a look at it.

Got the e-mail...will look at it in the AM...

Well...I played 25 years and had no CTDs or slowing at all. Everything seemed to go perfectly (which is more than I can say for poor Denmark :D) so all I can think is that the binkplayer is at fault and now that you've renamed the avi folder you should have no problems at all. :)
