I've been playing EU2 for several months now on my computer which is a 930 mhz IBM running win xp professional. I've kept up with the patches, through 1.04.

I installed 1.04 when it was released, and everything worked fine. Unfortunately, EU2 stopped functioning about 3 weeks ago.

The problem is pretty simple-- after about 30 seconds windows tells me that EU2 has encountered a problem and needs to close. I don't even reach the avi segments.

Reinstalling EU2 and the 1.04 patch causes the same problem. Reinstalling EU2 and running under 1.00 works fine. (I have updated my video drivers already.)

Any ideas? A bit of help would be appreciated,

rename the AVI folder, or lauch the game in compatibility mode Win95/98.
 
I remember someone who had a similar problem and it was caused by a virus. He needed the latest Norton Antivirus to detect it since the free-ware scanners he was using was not finding anything. The behavior was exactly the same as yours: everything works fine, then suddenly it stops working.

I just did a complete system scan with Norton AV and got a clean bill of health. So presumably no problems there.

By the way, I read some of the thread you referred to-- it sounded like quite an odyssey. Hopefully my problem is a little easier to fix.

What should I try next?

1) When your problem is not fixed by the elementary solutions, then it is not easy to fix! :D

2) Did you have Norton AV 2002 with the latest definition?
3) More things to try:
Install the latest drivers for your motherboard.
Install the latest BIOS for your motherboard.
Check the thread "useful tools and sites" where you will find a link to Detonator Destroyer (will remove old Nvidia drivers) and DirectX buster to uninstall DirectX. Remove both and install the latest version of each.

4) Check the Running problems thread on top of the forum. The first item contain a link (Uninstall) to a post where you'll find detailed instructions to completely remove the game. Do it and reinstall EU2. Try to play without any patch. If it works, proceed to install 1.04 (or wait a few days for 1.05). If it doesn't, post again, I'll try to find something <sigh>
 
Use XP System Restore

I think I had the same problem you had. I am running a Dell Dimension 8100 with an nVidia Geforce 2. The game worked fine for a while (but did get the Bink video error which I would skip past). Then suddenly it stopped working after a week or so and would never load again. Once it stopped working, it wouldn't even get to the Bink video error. Even when I reinstalled the game, it wouldn't run. Just a blank screen and I'd have to kill the process to get my computer back.

I think the Bink video hoses some driver files or something.

So, what I did was uninstall EU2, and then use WinXP system restore to some point before I installed the game. Then I installed all the latest drivers for my graphics card, Win updates, etc. and then set an XP restore point there.

Then I reinstalled EU2 fresh and then applied the 1.04 patch. Before I ever ran the game, I renamed the AVI directory and it's worked fine for the most part ever since.
