Can anything be done to stop EU (with 1.09b) crashing after prolonged gameplay? My first GC as Turkey has run fine, from 1492 right up to 1627 (spread over several sittings!), but in 1628/9 the program simply crashes out and I get returned back to windows.

I've returned to the autosave, and to two other recent saves, but none of them can provide more than 10 minutes more play before it crashes. There appears no pattern or trigger - but each time somewhere around 1628/9 the program just dies.

Things were going well for me as Turkey - well OK most of the world hated me, but I was securely in control of everything south and east of Venice - and it's tough not being able to carry on. Any ideas?

Kill any anti-virus apps and any other apps you can before you start play again. Start it with the No Music icon and see if that helps (especially if you are low on memory, <64mb). Run the game more slowly through the danger time. And don't hit the history button!

Where did you get patch 1.09b? That was a beta patch AFAIK.
Anyway download the 1.10 patch that will fix the history button bug that Andrew mentioned.
A work a round might be to play as another country during that dangerous year.
Load the saved game but pick another country and play that. After the danger period, save the game. Quit and start again. Pick Turkey and load the saved game.
