I started my GC campaign as Poland so I have Prussia as my vassal. However it seems I'm unable to annex it diplomatically as I dn't have a royal marriage with Prussia. Normaly having royal marriage is necessary to vassalaize the country so as Prussia is already my vassal this option in my diplomatic screen is greyed. Is this normal situation and if so, was it planned to be that way by the authors or is just a bug. Could it be that this was done to reflect the fact that Prussia being a vassal of Poland is result of a forced vassalisation - one of the conditions of the 2nd Treaty of Torun (1466).

Are you sure all other requisites for marriage are met? (I don't know exactly what they all are myself) Religion is the same? Perhaps nations don't always have marriageable people at hand all the time? I mean there's not an infinite number of royal personages who can be married at any one time in real life.

Diplomatic annexation

You do *not* need a royal marriage to annex a country. This requirement ist onyl needed for the start of the vassalization. After ten years vassalship (and good relations) you should be able to annex your vassal - if your are strong enough compared to your vassal.

Annexing a vassal

Many tahnks The Hulk. Does that mean thatif Prussia is my vassal at the start ogf the game january 1st, 1492 is the starting point for the count of 10 year vassalage period. As I mentioned above, historically Prussia was a vassal of oland for almost 30 years at that time.

Jan, in the diplomatic screen, if you hold the mouse over the text where it shows your vassal(s) text will appear showing the date of vassalage. Some events occur before 1492 so it could be that the vassalage was earlier.

You can also see the expiry dates of marriages and alliances by holding the cursor over those.

Thanks for all postings. I finally managed to annex them diplomatically.

P.S. Of course prussia hates Poland at the start of the game. After all they were made vassals by force after loosing a war. So I knew I had to buy their friendship.

You are right, and within the framework of the game rules it is as had aspossible for Poland to annex Prussia as diplomatic relations at the start of the game are at -200. I was able to invest heavily in improving those relations as I wasn't bothered neither by Russia (actually when they declared one of many wars against Kazan I attacked them myself and took Tver and Novgorod) nor by Turkey (which gained nothing from its early war with mamelukes and stayed very calm since then).

However I think Poland-Lithuania ability to annex Prussia peacfully has a historical explanation. remember that 13-year war (1454-1466) between Poland and Prussia was started after citizen of prussia (mostly merchants from Gdansk and Elblag) revolted and asked King Kazimierz to take them under his protection i.e. to incorporate them into Poland. Aparently they were thaught they would have more freedom and less taxes under Polish rule (actually they were right). As e result of that war oland recaptured Gdansk (province of Danzig in the game) that it lost to The Order at the biegining of the XIVth cty. So you can think of a peaceful annexation of Prussia in the same way - will of the people (again especially merchants) even if against the will of Grandmasters of the Order.

Well stated

Well thought out historical view on Prussian-Polish relations in general. By the way, do you currently live in Warsaw? I spent some time there in 1997 - I was in an area called 'dolna' - renting an old 70's style flat and doing some work.

One way of making the game more historical vis-a-vis Poland would be to give Poland the ability to more easily raise its level of religious toleration. Poland was incredibly mutl-religous and multi-ethnic by the late sixteenth century. Indeed, the country did not become firmly Catholic until after World War II - for very sad reasons.
Still, lingering animosities between Prussia and the Poles would continue to fester and make meaningful cooperation nearly impossible.
