There is a not-so-fine line between "Known well enough that we can draw fairly decent maps of the area" and "We've vaguely heard of such areas and have to fill maps of those areas with dragons and people with heads in their stomachs"

True, I doubt there was even one man in europa at the time who could draw me a convincing map of the far east. Perhaps a few arabs but that´s pretty much it.

My guess would be that part of the mongol invasion will be handeled by events. Otherwise the player could just refuse to give up provinces to the mongols.

And then get force-vassalized anyway, or outright annexed?
I think that the Golden Horde will be a nation in the game, but unplayable (of course). Probably they have a few provinces in Central Asia, then get a few events that beef them up for their rampage over Russia and the Middle East.
How far did the Mongols get in the mideast? Did they get much past baghdad?
The Mongols almost made it to the eastern Medditerranean coast. They sacked Damascus and were heading through Palestine toward Egypt when they were defeated by the Mamelukes.

The Seljuk Sultinate of Rum and the Empire of Trebizond were their vassals as well. When moving against Egypt, they teamed up with the remaining Crusader states in their push towards Egypt. One really has to wonder what would have happened if Hulagu hadn't been forced to return to Mongolia at that point with most of his army to deal with the succession of a new Khan...
I think one would be wise to remember that by the time the Mongols reached europe and the interior middle east they had picked up quite a few non-mongols on the way; enough to make egyptian chroniclers claim that the Mamelukes fought "their own kind" at the battle of Ayn Jalut in 1260...and a great deal of the leaders mentioned in the Chronicle of Novgorod have turkish names - even as early as 1223 at the Kalka River debacle a great deal of the commanders mentioned have turkish-sounding names.

One does not need to wonder any longer - CK will show us what might have happened in that case. There has been mention IIRC that perhaps the Mongols won't follow a strictly historical path through history and the Conquerer of the World may not return to Karakorum.

Originally posted by Nikolai Now there we have a big what if!!! Think of the whole Caliphate(it was still a whole Caliphate by then?) in mongol hands!!! Mongols gotta be playable!
Nah the Abbasid Caliph's effective sway didn't extend beyond Iraq. And the Mongols snuffed out its life and destroyed Baghdad in 1222. The Mongols had no interest in resurrecting the Caliphate. Even if they'd taken Egypt I doubt the Maghreb would have paid much notice.
Guess that would be possible. Not likely but hey, it will happen in someones game at some time. And they will put it in a "Strangest Thing You've Seen In CK" thread.
Let us just hope that historic leaders dont always die on the historic date, as in EU2. It would be cool to see the great Khan continue to ravage europe...from time to time.
