"there's something wrong with you, you have a disorder, because you experienced terrible things. people should be able to deal with terrible things on their own, but you can't."

that's what the D tells people. and when you tell people that, they don't go seek treatment. in fact, they have STRESS because they experienced TRAUMA. there's no disorder there. it's a natural reaction to stress.

so BS back on you.

Your right and wrong. In the case of what a typical person that is not a remotely qualified person in the field of psychology the word disorder is not taken for it's actual meaning. PTSD is a medical term and means something different than most people think. I mean how often do you hear people use the words chronic and acute interchangeably?

If we're doing the random-impressions-thing, then PTS just sounds too harmless for me - "oh, you got posttraumatic stress? Well, I'm stressed at work and don't need a Doctor! Get over it." Disorder emphasizes that it's something that it's a "legitimate" condition that needs treatment.

I mean, I can understand that nobody wants to admit that something is "wrong with their head" and so they make it sound "normal" so people are less wary about a diagnosis. But I think that comes with its own drawbacks (as mentioned above), so frankly I think this is overall just not productive.

... honestly, just call it "war cancer", then everyone will quickly go get whatever treatment is available and everyone knows to take cancer seriously, so nobody will make fun of those people. ^^

We'll see an instant increase in ribbons, t-shirts, wrist bands, and foot races; but I expect it won't go away. :p

You don't just get PTSD through war you can get it through any trauma in your life i.e people in violent relationships, violent childhoods, experiencing horrific accidents etc.... I could imagine the ancient/medieval world impacted through it: torture, strong patriarchal society, disease, capital punishment, poverty, religious fundamentalism would be breeding grounds for the illness.

Obviously just can't say how much.

This sounds right. It happened but its in the past now and hasnt been recorded in history as much because it wasnt important compared to other things. Or it was not cared about because of pride or expectations.
