(1) West-European (Germanic?)
North France, England, Lowerlands, Western Germany

All of this but England was part of the Frankish heartland of Charlemagne. How about "Frankia" or "Nuestria", the names current then?

(2) Central-European (Eastern?)
Eastern Germany, Poland, Bohemia, Hungary

A toughie. "Scythia", "Austrasia", "Polonia"? "Western Slavs"?

(3) East-European (Russian?)Russia

"Ruthenia" or "Rus"

(4) South-European (Mediterranean?)Italy, Southern France
"Romance" is perfect. Does this include Spain?

(5) North-European (Scandinavian?)Sweden, Denmark

Plus Norway? "Vikland" or "Scandia". I'd consider adding England here; its culture was much more in tune with Scandinavia than France in 1066.

(6) Byzantine Byzantium

"Hellas"

(7) Saracen Northern Africa, Persia, Egypt, Syria[/COLOR

"Saracen" is good. So is "Islam"

(8) Celtic Ireland, Islands

"Celtic" is good. Should include Scotland and Brittany.

(9) Nomadic Turks, Cumans, Mongols, Pazhinaks

"Nomadic" is good. How about "Scythia"? (I know, I tried that earlier)

(10) Forest (Forest Pagan?)
Obodrites, Livs, Prussen, Mordva, Chuvash

"Baltic", "Balt"

(11) Samoed (Igloo? North Pagan? Ice Pagan?)Samoeds

"Lappland"

The problem is, most of those arn't real names or culture names, Scandia? Balt?

Gentlemen, there are 11 culture types in the game. This number is final and will not change. Moreover, we have already finalised the art for each of those (and that is a lot of mighty art, but you will see the screenies soon enough =) ). So up to the discussion are the exact flavour names then... And possible ideas on their geo-spread, but be certain that we did our homework there ;).

Suggestions to improve?

The culture of NW Europe should be 'Frankish'. Not perfect, but succinct, better than 'Germanic' and less sterile-sounding than 'West European'.

EDIT: And 'Scandinavian' should be 'Norse'.

(6) Byzantine Byzantium

"Hellas"

i can always appreciate looking for the "what did they call themselves" name, and while not bringing up the byzantine "dead horse" (which demetrios will thank us for), i can safely tell you that's not it :D

"hellas" is a geographical & political term, and in either case refers to an area much smaller than the byzantine empire

"hellenic" by this time was stripped of all the loftier ideals of hellenism (which was called - in deference to the "dead horse" - something else) and left with the baser notions of superstition, paganism, heresy, and in due time, homosexuality

not to mention that the empire had by this time grown out of its greek cultural infancy and roman adolescence, and in its old age took what it wished from either and even adopted some eastern children - to make a bad analogy, by "hellas" you would be swaddling the adult with a child's diaper  ;)

i think that some people here really must stop stabing the same corpse with the same dagger. true one wont be saved for saying anything in favour of one country, but one wont be saved for saying anything against it either, please do realise that.

One day a game maker decided to let the players decide the twelve names of the culture groups in the game. Uknowingly starting an argument that has lasted 9 months has had 525 posts and has been resurected so many times over something that probaly will be changeble through minor editing:D

Just a thought:)

I think I have to agree with you on this one . . .

I have a slight suspicion that there will be a few text files hidden throughout the file directory in the game

;)
