Is there any reason for you to research trade technology beyond level 4 or infrastructure technology beyond level 6? Should I use the money I was using for trade and infrastructure research to increase the speed of my land and naval research? That's all I wanted to know.

yes

In your income screen (not the research) you will see that with every new technonolgy in trade and infrastructure you can access a bit more of your trade income and a bit more on your production income. Every new tech level gives you about 10% more income in these areas. Moreover, the trade level helps you with placing merchants and taking advantage of CoTs better (more trade genereated).
So, yes you want more research in these areas.

As kptb said you gain more and more money as your level goes up. Take this for example. In my last England GC by the mid-mid late 1700's I had maxed out all my research. I owned the the province of Taiwan which game me ownership of the CoT there. This CoT was wotrh over 2000d! Now image your trader tech is level 10. You get 2000d a year from that CoT if you are the only one there (like I was at times).Actuallt I was making more than what the CoT was worth because I had IIRC 9 refineries which improves your trade income multiplier! I only monopolized CoT's that I owned (just some wierd thing I have). Having said that I did own Anglia,Alabama,Flanders,Danzig,Jakarta,Delhi, and Taiwan. If you look 4 out of the 7 are not in Europe which in my game means they are worth a whole hell of a lot more! With a .109% mutiplier.....THAT'S CASH!!!!!!

If I understand it correctly refineries do help in adding a bonus to trade research , but I think each refinery gives a 1% bonus to your trade multiplier. I know for a fact I had .109%..belive me I had to look again just to be sure.As far a goods manuf. for infrustructure I don't know because I don't see where the income tax % is. Of course I could be overlooking it somewhere

You wheren't Reformed by any chance ?

Reformed gets + to income % both in Trade & Infra

Playing England

You know I am not qiute sure. It's the first religion conversion available. (Reformed , of Prot. I can't remember), but the relligion that I switched I stayed with for the rest of the game. It's the religion were everyone says to switch to as soon as you get the chance so you can get colonists.
